Twitter / Pownce Names?

ses5909 on Twitter as well as on pownce although I haven't done anything with pownce since signing up.

And I had actually not signed up for twitter until just recently... It took me a while to catch on. I asked my friend about it and she said..

well, let's say you have to poop. and you feel the need to tell everyone. You can type it in twitter and all of your contacts will be notified via text or IM or web.

Great.. WHERE CAN I SIGN UP??

I have recently been following what folks are doing on Twitter, and adding my inputs. My Twitter name is GrowingUpRanch. I chose that since i grew up living in the traditional ranch style homes which was the symbol of real estate in the United States for many years, as the ranch style home was the most popular.

twittervision is new to me. Kind of cool to look at.

I'm still trying to figure out how I can make it useful to me. I use iChat for an IM client and no one I know (until now!) is twitter...ing.

Can someone help me with BUSINESS applications using twitter? Not sure I see the value. Or is it used mostly for non-biz social connections?

I had the same question, Judy. I couldn't figure out the heck I could use this silly tracking app to build my business.

There's an article in Fortune (last month? The Target issue) about Twitter and such. It described how the COO of blitz tv started following their customers on Twitter. After hearing several complaints about one aspect of the service, they fixed it the same day and started hearing positive comments again.

That's only one example (albeit very specific), but it made my ears perk up.

I'll admit I'm still figuring it out, but I've been following (and being followed by) other people in my industry. There's a danger of information overload, but there's also a gold mine of marketing opportunity here if you can weed out the junk.

I've got my Twitter updates on my blog (http://illoicious.blogspot.com) and it will be interesting to see what I can make of that.

I have mixed feelings about twitter. I took me a long time before I signed up (nmw), and/but in the meantime I have oftentimes been flooded with meaningless babble (see e.g. this comment I made on edelmandigital.com).

But if you carefully trim your contacts to only a select few who are upright enough not waste your time with nonsense, then it can still be used as a great "discovery" and/or "networking" tool.

However, it is also easy to get "wrapped up" in an echo chamber this way, so you have actively build your own bridges (and traverse them) to keep up with other communities. As with many things, the ideal / golden mean is important.

And I do agree with you, Judy, that biznik seems to be much more focused on issues which small business actually grapple with day in and day out.

I might sound like a broken record, but what a great thread! I'm finding I learn so much about different networking tools by listening here on Biznik.

My question is this: how do you moderate the time you spend as a business owner using different internet networking tools? I find that being an active, engaged member here is a fairly large investment of my time. I can't imagine being equally invested elsewhere!

How to leverage Twitter for small business? Here's one example:

I saw that a colleague has updated recently about an article he liked. I read it, get the info, it's great, yay, we're all happy. I contacted the writer to tell him. He says thanks, we chat, and he asks if I would like to guest on his blog.

This will likely raise my own blog profile and potentially find new readers who are art buyers and want to commission my work.

All because I was tabbing between Twitter and my e-mail I saw an article.

It's not an exact science, and it's only one example. I think my other example (earlier post) of blitz tv should provoke some thought among independents as well.

Sheesh - I sound like I'm promoting Twitter! I'm really not, I just like to share some interesting points to consider and my experience (uh, this week).

I was having dinner with a business associate who has an iPhone. He was looking at Twitter updates while I was ordering and he shared one that was funny and one that turned into a potential opp for both of us.

I consider every form of communication relevant to my indie business. Even potentially annoying distractions like Twitter.

The question is how to sort through the clutter to find the value for your business specifically.

I use Twhirl and TweetDeck to manage my usage. http://twhirl.com and http://tweetdeck.com. I have the notification bells turned off except for replies and direct messages to me.

With TweetDeck you can group your followers. I have a VIP group and when busy or on deadline, I only read that groups' tweets and save the rest for when time permits.

Btw, some of these social networking sites enhance your strategic marketing and sales efforts. When I share a new blog post or radio interview URL, I get clicks to my site or offering.

I've found twitter to be a very effective marketing tool and it's fun. I connect to more people in less time than via any other medium. In my opinion, these tools level the playing field.
