Formatting options for comments; has this been gone for awhile and I just missed its graceful exit, or is its absence a bug?

You are able to use a variety of formatting in your posts, if you know: 1. how 2. to
Make it - do - it.
Seriously though... you make a good point! There is no way to know what kind of formatting is possible, is there?
I will write an FAQ question about that.
In the interim, here is a cheat sheet:
Double-asterisk this text is bold double-asterisk
Single-asterisk this text is italic single-asterisk
To put a URL into your comments, format it like this:
<5a href="http://apple.com">BLUE LINK TEXT</a5>
(note: to make this work you must remove the 5's.)
Unordered lists are created by starting each new line with a dash. - Item a - Item b - Item c
Ordered Lists are created by starting each new line with a digit followed by a period. 1. Item 1 2. Item 2 3. Item 3

It was the list thing I couldn't remember. Does flat-out HTML work always? I know it does for links, but lists, too? Oh. I suppose I could always just experiment!
(There used to be a "format options" cheat sheet presented below the comment-making box; that's gone now. I presume it was yanked to thwart folks who were over-embedding links ... ;-)

Most HTML works. We protect against things that could lead to abuse, but basic formatting should work fine.
The Format Options button went away sort of accidentally, and then we made changes to it, and now we are moving to a different formatting system (but the old ones will still work), and ... well ... there was a lot of flux and a lot of weird little instances of things not working.
So instead of posting the options and having them not work very well, we removed the info about them.
We had bigger fish to fry, essentially.
However, once our underlying systems have been upgraded (hopefully this week), we will be on a platform that is up to date and more robust. Fixing little things like this should be much easier on the new foundation!

Christian, can you help out Steve? He sent me this e-mail so I am sending it on toyou. Thanks for helping him out.
From: Steve Sibley [mailto:steve@luxurient.com] Sent: Thursday, May 21, 2009 2:09 PM To: idealco@comcast.net Subject: biznik connection
John,
Please forward to your biznik contact, here is the problem I am experiencing.
I can connect to biznik.com and navigate around the site but when I go to log on I get an hour glass that never quits, I have done this on my office and home computers which have different versions of internet explorer with the same result. I have logged on in the past through my office computer and successfully logged on. When I do Control alt delete to terminate the application it says the site is not responding…
Can you get me some help? Thanks for the effort.

Hello,
I have an event next week and, without doing anything, the event time changed. Then I noticed that another event I am attending next week had the wrong time...then I noticed that almost every biznik event had starting times that were off...

David,
We just released a new version of the site. There may be an issue with time calculations. Can you tell me what the proper time for your events should be?
Thanks,
Andrew Lippert

Andrew,
My event is from 5:30 to 7:00 pm this Thursday May 28th.
However it looks like ALL the event times have been changed.
Best, David

Just to let you all know, we are aware that Event times are messed up right now, and we are working on the problem.
There also might be a problem with photo uploads, and with getting duplicate emails.
Got a few wrinkles to work out of the major upgrade we did last night. Watch this space for updates...

Thanks for your patience...

I know on some other "social" networking sites you can view recent activity of those linked to your page on a single page, such as your home page or "friends" page.
This is helpful when checking to see who has posted a new blog, etc.
In this case, it would be helpful when looking to see who among those linked to my page may have posted new content in the form of and article, promotion or event.
Is there a way to do this in Biznik that I've overlooked to this point without going to each individual person's page?

There are four events appearing on my sidebar (the one that shows who from my network is attending what), but they do not show on the main event pages--and when I follow the links there's a red message that those events have been deleted.

Leila,
Thank you very much for reporting the problem. I failed to differentiate the path to events that were part of your network but not published to the Biznik calendar. This has been fixed.
I hope you enjoyed your holiday weekend!

Public Service Announcement
We are tracking down some weird problems with the site right now, and hope to have a solution in place shortly.
Essentially, clicking a button results in the "spinny wheel" process indicator just spinning and spinning and spinning.... and spinning...
What is happening is that the actual action has been completed in the background, but for some reason your web browser is not being informed that your action is complete.
This shows up when uploading photos, sending emails, updating your promotions, and, well, pretty much everywhere!
We are hot on the trail of a fix, though. Hang in there...

Hi there!
Can't seem to upload photos from my lovely event of yesterday...what happens is this: I press on Upload photos, then browse, select a picture from my snapfire file, then press upload....then get a page of the current events with a "sorry this was deleted" message on top of the page.
que pasa? What was deleted?
anyhoo....its a bug, tried several times. No pictures uploaded yet. Elke
PS: I still cannot tell if a message or comment is posted...jsut get the spinning wheel, then have to press the firefox refresh button to see if it posted. Just thought I'd mention that bug too.

update: now when I try to upload photos, I get the spinning wheel for quite awhile, and then "sorry, can't find that page." so no go for photos! :-(

.... however, the photo actually uploads, right?
We have had a problem with the result message when uploading photos. You select the photo, click the Upload button, the wheel spins, the photo uploads, and then it reports the wrong message!
I thought we had this bug skwashed mid last week, but I'll look into it today...

Thanks for looking into it.

I just tried to post my article again this morning...still nothing....a little spinning wheel action , but then no post.
Now what?

@Elke: I just tried to post a test article, and it was able to post just fine. Which does not really help you solve your problem, does it? ;-)
Once again, weird things are happening on your computer that other people are not experiencing, and do not seem to be systemic problems with the site...
We still need to see your computer. So do let us know when you can come by the office, and we'll get to the bottom of these issues!

When I first posted my comment/question, I checked the little box so that I would know when a reply to my comment/question had been posted.
I never got a response to the initial question, and that's okay, I guess; but now I'm getting an E-mail reminder every time someone else posts a comment in this thread.
Since their comments don't really relate to my question, I'd like to disengage the reminder contraption.
How do I do that?

On the left side, underneath my photo, you will see the "Stop following topic" link.
Click that, and you will be removed from further notifications on this thread.

another bug and fyi: I managed to post my article on a friend's computer ...he uses Windows XP, and it posted! That's the good news!
The bad news is:
1: I cannot edit the article from either his computer nor mine...and I have some choice typos at the end of the article.
When I press the edit button, the "Publish your article" button comes on! and that's all.
bug 2: funky formatting on my article: on the right side is all the stuff that is usually at the top of the page : FAQ"s , etc...and all the way down below the article are the tags, etc.
and 3: I used ** to bold a few topics...and only the astericks came out on the article....it did not bold the letters.
does his computer have aliens too?

Elke,
The content of your article included hidden characters inserted by Microsoft Word. Some of those characters included extra HTML tags that broke the formatting of the page. I have cleaned up the extraneous code lingering behind the scenes and your article is now fully formatted and renders properly. Feel free to edit to your heart's content.
As far as your attempts to use the shorthand for bold and italics you should instead use the formatting tools included on the article text field. This is the one location where we've favored the rich HTML control over using the shorthand syntax.
Here's hoping this helps,
Andrew Lippert CTO - Biznik
