10 more ways to gain NEW Clients

Life is short, you have very short time to capture you new clients. Make every minute count.
Written Nov 26, 2008, read 222 times since then.

  1. Print up your own plastic gift cards with a dollar value printed on the front.  As a society we have gotten so use to using gift cards, they are seen as cash value.  By putting a dollar value on that card you are giving your potential clients cash.  This is a very effective tool for getting your current clients to give you referrals.  They are now not giving there friends a sales pitch for you but a present from themselves. I have researched this and the best place that I have found is eCard Systems at www.ecardsystems.com.
  2. Make it a goal to do as many speeches as you can for your community. For help in booking a speaking gig, contact all of your current and former clients for ideas on organizations that could use you as a guest speaker.  Sometimes to get these speaking engagements it is not as much of what you know as WHO you know.
  3. Be a guest expert on someone’s blog or radio talk show.
  4. Group your services with another professional who is selling a package.  Examples of this are making a package with a photographer head shot with design services for your brochures and business cards. Getting a tree trimmer and a landscaper to put together a deal.  Everyone wants added value.
  5. Take a look back at your 2008 and review all you actually accomplished this year. Look at how you have spread your wings this year. Set a VISION for 2009: what do you want 2009 to be about? Invite the world to surprise you and help you in this. This is POWERFUL. Just relax and spread your wings.
  6. Bring you A game to every job you have.  It is much easier to keep a raving client then appease a disgruntled one. Remember you got into this business because you loved it.  So let it show.
  7. Once a month (or more if you have the time) put together a pop in for your best clients.  I plan on writing a article about this, but it is a little treat for your clients.  My favorite is a frosted cupcake in a take out Chinese box.  I put a little curly ribbon on the top with my card stapled on the side.   Everyone loves a cupcake. Especially ME!
  8. Realizing that everyone is not your client. But they might be related to your potential client.  People do business with people that they like, by not selling to them you just might be one of those people.
  9. Naturally be the go to person for your friend and family.  If people know you as this, they will not only trust you but they will need you to help them maneuver through life.  When you are constantly referring other business they will look for ways to refer you.   The givers gain mentality.
  10. Partner with other professionals that will hand out your gift cards as cash.  I have done this with my yellow page rep and my real-estate agent.  They have given over 125 gift cards out for me. It is valued as a gift they give to there client and comes with a great recommendation for me.

So there you have it - 10 MORE low cost marketing tips for 2009.

I love using SendOutCards for potential clients. You can buy in to different levels. Not only can you send greeting cards, but delicious gifts can be delivered with the card. They have a variety of gifts such as books that are geared towards the business owner. It's a really good tool for yourself or your business. I use SOC for both. It was so nice, I just set up a Christmas card to be sent out in a few days and I was able to put in pictures from my photo library. I still think the best part is to not have to shop, lick a single envelope or adhere a stamp!

Janis, SendOutCards is an MLM, and we strictly forbid promoting MLMs on Biznik. Please refrain from promoting MLMs in any way on this community - we're very serious about enforcing our terms of service on that one.

Ooops! Sorry! In the way I use it, I choose to ignore the other side which some people pursue. I'm not interested in any of that. Delete any mention of it if necessary.

Excellent article Megan! I've always appreciated your advise.

I would like to comment on what Dan said about SendOutCards. Though I fully respect the policies of Biznik, I do not think Janis was out of line at all! I agree with her - SendOutCards is an excellent service. I don't see anything wrong with mentioning that. She didn't say "here's my website, please check it out!", she just mentioned a product she found helpful.

Think of it like this... if someone liked Mary Kay and said "I like this lipstick, you should try it", it's entirely different from "I like this company, you should become a consultant". Janis wasn't promoting a MLM, she was promoting a service she found valuable.

I apologize if I'm missing something or out of line, but I felt I had to chime in. As Janis said, please feel free to delete this comment or mention of SendOutCards if inappropriate. Thanks!

Cheers to the queen of low cost!

Who says you have to have money to make money? You just have to know how to make with what you got...and then money will come. Brilliant!

Thanks for the list of tips. I like the fact that your tips are action oriented. I think each successful business needs to be initiating rather than being passive.

The plastic gift cards idea is interesting, kind of like a Starbucks card, however, I'm not a supporter of creating lots of plastic marketing collateral. Sure it may stick around longer than paper, but, it pretty much ends up in a landfill.

I like how some of your ideas do not giving away lots of gifts, trinkets, and chotskies. I prefer to the kind of things that build up a community and add value.

    # 5 is so important! Often, people can be so intent on their goal that they miss the progress that they've made.

Celebrating the achievements, regardless of size, helps to change our physiology, which goes a long way to allowing us to do better.

Even our mistakes are valuable, for they allow us to learn & grow - if we have the right attitude about it.

Thanks for helping us grow, Megan.

thanks Megan, love the gift card idea. You're right - the perception is that they have cash value. I'm thinking the same idea might work really well for workshops.

The neat thing about these cards Peter is that you can reuse them. Since you just use them for one session or product you can take them back and reissue them to the next lucky potential client. ;-)

Thank you for an excellent article. I love the cupcake idea, FUN and low cost. Do you have a way to expedite the speaking engagements? We have a host of topics related to health and wellness that we would love to get out to business. Any ideas are much appreciated. ~MM

Another outstanding article Megan! #2 is an excellent idea. I did alot more public speaking this year and it definitely adds more credibility to your service or product. And....it's a great way to talk to an entire room full of people rather than one on one. (Working smarter, not harder) Looking forward to reading more of your articles. Gina
