What Do You Mean You Don't Know What to Write About?!?!
Here are 20+ Ideas to Get You Started

"I feel very adventurous. There are so many doors to be opened, and I'm not afraid to look behind them. " ~ Elizabeth Taylor

One of the things my clients often complain about is not only finding the time to create new content, but more importantly, finding something to write about.

The thing is, YOU are the expert in your business.

You know everything there is to know about your products, your services and your market.  And if you don't believe me, considering this...you know more than your clients know and that my friend, qualifies you as an expert in their eyes.

So as an expert, you have plenty to write about.

I suggest finding a little quiet time and start with the basics and create a master list (you know how much I love my master lists) about WHAT you know deep down, that you know.  I find that creating a list of at least 25 topics will get you through half the year at one article a week.

Here's a list of 20 questions or ideas to get you started creating content today...

  1. Where does your passion lie?
  2. Why did you decide to do what you do or to become the person you are?
  3. What search terms do people use to find you?
  4. What questions to people ask you when they hear what you do?
  5. What can you teach others HOW to do in a step-by-step tutorial?
  6. What does your ideal client NEED to know about your topic of expertise?
  7. What challenges do you (and/or your clients) face on a regular basis?
  8. What does the general public need to know about your services or your products?
  9. Who inspires you and why?
  10. What's a current or typical problem that your industry or market might be facing right now?
  11. Who can you interview as an expert (or an influencer) in your industry or market?
  12. What Top 3, Top 5 or Top 10 tips can you share with your readers?
  13. What mistake have you made in your business and what have you learned from it?
  14. What is a day in your business like?
  15. Who would you like to meet and why?  And while you're at it, why not ask if you can interview them?
  16. What are you favorite books or must-read books for your market or niche?
  17. Find a motivational or educational video or quote and share it with your audience.
  18. Find a great free resource or compile a list of free resources that you think your target audience would benefit from.
  19. Compile a Facebook or Twitter list of influencers and experts to share with your target market (Billboard Magazine just did this and name my husband one of the 140 "best music biz characters" on Twitter!!)
  20. How does a current event (or gossip, or a big movie, or a best selling book) relate to your business (you'll find quite a few "What I Learned From Charlie Sheen" or "How My Business is Like/Not Like Charlie Sheen" kind of articles out there these days).
  21. What makes your business, your services or even YOU special or different than others?

You'll find that once you start playing around with this list, you'll get other ideas popping into your head. In fact, many of these questions or ideas could probably give you 2-5 different articles.

And you may find, like one of my clients, that once you started getting all you know out there an onto a list, you realize that you have enough content to write a book or lead a class!!  You really don't realize just how much you do know.

And best of all...the more you write, the better you'll get at not only writing, but also at identifying, claiming (and explaining) and leveraging your expertise.

    Katy,

A year ago I started a Writer's Support Group for the Reticent Blogger (aka Writer) that has literally met each Tuesday at 1pm. Started as 6 of us and is typically now nearly two dozen. And oh what a journey it has been for those who come quite regularly.

The growth from the ideas generated and the support given have inspired people. And I intend to share your list for it is a great list to springboard off of.

I checked out your site as well and appreciate what you are all about. And what a background you have.

It gives me an idea for a blog entry myself...

Thanks for writing this post and glad it hit the main page!

Gwynneth, I'm glad that you were able to use the ideas. I know folks often say that they can't write - but we all know we can. What the really mean most times is that they don't know what to write about.

I hope the ideas have inspired you!

    Hi Christine!

I'm glad to hear that you like the list and will be sharing it with folks. And you're right, with the proper digging (or in this case, starting point) it turns out that everyone has a story to tell and expertise to share.

    Katy,

I did! It prompted a great discussion.

A year and counting the Tuesdays. We are a community of writers emerging, established and maintaining each other.

Feel free to replicate! IT works to attract the most wonderful people into one's orbit.

    Blessings.
