Voice is everywhere in our world. From large corporations to corner stores, there's a voice attached to your company. People think of this voice when the name of your company is mentioned. The voice used to tell your story affects how your business is perceived. This is especially true since most every organization now has an online presence. The Web has given everyone a platform for getting the word out, becoming better known, and using the Internet to help their business grow.

Sounds great so far. Right?

Think it's easy? Think again.

When visitors click onto your Website, many are seeing your business for the first time. If the combination of voice, tone, words--overall content is off message, convoluted or confusing, people get what I refer to as "glazed over eyeballs." And this is quickly followed by clicking away.

So how do you get a visitor to stay for a while, and turn a visitor into a customer or client?

Let's step back to the person at their computer who clicked on BelieveUsWe DoMakeReallyCoolStuff.com. The one with the glazed over eyeballs.

Why did they click away?

Unique

One big reason people immediately click away is when Web content screams out "Big corporate-speak blah blah, with a side dish of same old, same old." If an online visitor begins reading about your company and it sounds just like every other business on the Web, this is step one on the path to glazed eyeballs. You know your company is unique-you make cool stuff. But your content says, "We can't be bothered with figuring out what makes us unique from our competitors, so we'll just toss up a few random words to fill in this space." The Web is full of this type of content. And if you've seen one paragraph of corporate-speak, you've seen them all.

Clear

A second reason is lack of clarity. Eyeballs are cruising the Web at top speed, and if your message isn't clear upon first reading, you may not get a second chance. Take the time to figure out what sets you apart, and clarify and refine your content. Make it clear and direct. Use a natural voice to tell your story, and put yourself in your words. It'll be time well spent. Pretty soon you can almost hear those eyeballs sticking to the screen.

Engaged

The third reason is the voice of the modern world--the conversational tone. Saying it the way people speak, and getting the message across as clearly as someone who's in the same room, sitting right across the table from you. "You want to know about BelieveUsWeDoMakeReallyCoolStuff.com? Come over here. Have a seat. First of all, we make our stuff for people just like you who love really cool stuff, and on top of that we love what we do..."

Really? I've been searching for a company just like yours. Tell me more.
