5 reasons to hire Creative Freelancers
Why hire a creative freelancer for your - or your client's project? Here's the top 5 reasons.
It doesn't matter if you have a large scale, full service ad agency with an in-house staff of designers, or if you are a small company with a need for someone to create your website or logo, building a relationship with outside creative freelancers is a smart thing to do. Freelancers can come in handy in a tight deadline, relieve the workload of the in-house staff and bring expertise you may not have in your core group.
Here are the top 5 reasons to go with a creative freelancer to help you get your next project - or your client's next project - completed to perfection.
- Freelancers are not on your payroll
who knows what's going to happen in these crazy and scary economic times. Freelancers only charge for the work they do. You are not paying them when there is no work to be done. You don't have to pay them benefits and you don't have to purchase them a parking pass. They will be able to give you an estimate of what they will charge for their services so you can factor that into your budget. Another plus is that freelancers, since they typically work from their own home or studio, will not cost you precious office space or require you to invest in equipment or software. - Freelancers are always available
Unlike an in-house staff that has set hours, freelancers work when there is work to be done. If that means they need to work through the night, or over a weekend or holiday, a freelancer will get it done. Just be aware that if you ask a freelancer to work at odd hours, you may be charged extra fees for that service. But, sometimes it's worth it. Picture this - your client calls you at 6:30pm your time from the west coast demanding changes to the presentation for tomorrow morning's meeting. Your in-house design team has gone home for the night. But, you don't go into panic melt-down mode, because you have your trusty freelance designer on speed dial. They are available and willing to take on the changes, thus saving the day and making you look like a hero to your client. - They will try to impress the heck out of you
Trust me. Freelancers don't want to keep looking for new clients each time they need work. They want to build strong relationships with several core clients and get more than one job from them. In fact, they will do backflips for you if it means a steady flow of work. Freelancers also want you to refer them to your friends and colleagues. So they really are going to go over an above the call of duty to impress you and let you know how much they appreciate the work - New ideas & fresh perspectives
When you hire a creative freelancer, you bring in a fresh perspective on the project. You may be surprised not only in the great ideas that come flowing in from the freelancer (remember, they are eager to please) but also how it mixes up the dynamic of your core staff - which also results in new ideas. If you are talking about hiring a freelance illustrator or graphic design, you have the opportunity to hire someone whose style fits the project. - Freelancers bring expertise
Usually, a freelance creative will specialize in one area of their discipline. Annual report design, white paper copywriting, medical illustration, etc. But, even if your freelancer is a "Jack-of-all-Trades" type of professional, they still bring with them expertise in one or several areas. Freelancers make it their job to become experts in their trade. Here's a tip: Look for creative freelancers that have knowledge in several disciplines - a graphic designer that's also an illustrator saves you from hiring two freelancers for the same project.

Well said, Jamie.
I always recommend my clients have a bench of freelancers to call when their internal capacity is full. Until they have work to sustain a full-time employee all the time, they should utilize outsourced resources. I think too often companies hire more internal staff than is necessary. It's very important to have the right mix, so they can flex with the projects/workload they have. Idle hands are just extra overhead detracting from the bottom line.
On the flip side, utilizing the right mix of freelancers to internal employees impacts creativity from the aspect of burnout. Burning out salaried employees for the sake of the bottom line can have very negative impacts on the quality of the work (which, of course, will catch up with the bottom line). It's important for businesses to take into consideration the well being of their employees when thinking about the staffing mix.
Of course, specials skills, knowledge, ideas, and all that other good stuff freelancers can add are great as well.
Figuring out the right mix of employees to freelancers can be a challenge for many business owners. Those who are able to get the right mix are able to build profitability and a great working culture simultaneously. That's a real win-win.

thanks for the positive feedback on my first article! Yeah, I really think, Kelly, that a business can not only have a staff of full time designers, say, but, also a roster of freelancers that they can call on to work at odd hours or lighten the load on their staff.

Great article Jamie. I am a creative freelancer myself and I really appreciate what you said. This is the first time I have actually come across an article that encourages creative directors to hire freelancers. Hopefully it will encourage people to hire indie artists more often.
