“If your sales are slow
And your patience is getting low
Do this if you can,
Try a niche maintenance plan.
Then watch your sales start to grow. " - Primm

A niche maintenance plan helps you to get the maximum niche advantage out of your product or service. It's essential, especially in today’s crowded marketplace. If you don't have a niche, shame on you! If I can't help you get one or improve the niche you have in this article ... shame on me.

I call having a niche maintenance plan low cost Success Insurance.

It’s no longer enough just to have a good product or service. You must make it job one to make sure your getting the maximum niche advantage out of your business, product or service.

The stronger your niche the more sales you’ll produce. If you don't take time to strengthen your niche each day you could be leaving thousands of dollars on the table(ooch, ouch).

To get the maximum mileage from your car you have to perform maintenance on it, right? The same holds true for your business, product or service niche.

Because your business, product or service niche is one of your most valuable business tools, you want it to stay as sharp as possible. A sharp tool will always help you work more efficiently.

The last statement is especially true if you have more than one competitor.

Your niche is what separates you from your competition in your customers eyes. This is why you always want to make sure your niche is firing on all cylinders.

The best way to make sure you’re getting the maximum niche advantage is to perform a niche maintenance check-up.

Every savvy business person knows the importance of having a business, product or service niche. But few people know the specific steps to take to keep that niche strong and competitive. There are steps you can take to achieve this goal.

Niche consultants worth their salt perform a 50-point checklist for their clients. This helps them evaluate and strengthen their business, product or service niche.

But to save time and space I’ll give you 7 simple steps you can use now to perform your own niche maintenance for your product or service.

I recommend writing or typing the 7 steps on paper and hanging them in a prominent place as a reminder.

With Pen in hand and paper in front of you ask yourself these revealing questions...

1. What successful features can I adapt from another business, product or service - to make mine better for my target customers?

2. What positive features can I add to make my business, product or service to benefit my target customers?

3. How can I make it easier for my target customers to buy, use, own or enjoy my product or service?

4. What disadvantage or inconvenience can I eliminate from my product or service to make it better for my target customer?

5. How can I make my target customer feel more safe and secure before, during and after buying my product or service?

6. What feature or results can I speed up to make my product or service better for my target customers?

7. What am I willing or able to do that my competitors can’t or won’t do for my target market? Hint: the quickest way to make money is to do something others don't like to do.

Now write down any ideas your brain spits out. Evaluate the most do-able first.

And take action. Don't wait for the ideal conditions. Just start where you stand and as you take bold actions clearer answers and solutions will appear. So stay alert for them.

Taking the time to improve your product or services niche appeal each day is your best insurance against failure.

"May your profits increase and you problems decrease."

Thanks for the tips Roy. As a VA I am always reading about having a niche, which confuses me. As far as I can see my skills are able to assist any area and I don't want to back myself into a corner and miss a client because he thought I didn't do that sort of work. However, I can see how many of your tips are going to make good pondering points while I have my coffee. So much to learn and so little time! I'm printing the checklist as we 'speak' so look out world here I come - and it's Roy's fault!

Roy, nice article. We (at Marketing Mentor) are constantly talking to clients about the importance of having a niche, but we've never really thought about "niche maintenance." Interesting idea.

And I like your list of questions. I think a good way to stay in touch with your niche and know how to answer these questions is to be involved in their trade groups and network with them. I tell my clients that depending on the industry, their niche can change so quickly, and if they stay behind their desk for too long they'll be quickly out of the loop.
