Someone recently mentioned to me that they were struggling in their business. Their concern led them to seek some counsel through government agencies that provide guidance to business owners. Their thought was "if I just get some help understanding HOW to do this business, I'll be alright". Unfortunately, that wasn't proving to be true and their business was going nowhere fast.

This scenario is all too familiar. Most of us have been taught that a job is the coveted end-result of our childhood and young adult efforts. Some of us experience angst about telling our families that we are leaving or opting out of the corporate sector. And even when we do, we still think like an employee. Armed with enthusiasm and big dreams, we invest in office space, furnishings, technology, business cards, advertising, websites, and the other accoutrements of business. We tell everyone about the value of our new product or service. Then we prep, plan, redesign, reorganize, and stock inventory. After all, if I have a desk with a nameplate that reads "My Name - Entrepreneur" or a listing in the Yellow Pages or a website or a garage full of Vitamin X, I'm in business, right?

I think you know the answer. Really it begins with convincing yourself that you are who you are. Understanding where you are can be as simple as someone asking, "What do you do?" Whatever your answer, it's revealing about how you see yourself. And that is the key! Your entrepreneurial mindset is more important than all the other stuff. If you truly envision yourself as a business owner, an entrepreneur, a trailblazer, success cannot escape your grasp.

So, how to get there? The answer is so simple ... and chances are you've heard it before. As a matter of fact, I know you have. You get there by 'Acting As If'. Yes, that's right - acting as if you already are who you want to become. See if you want to become a lifestyle coach, chances are you already advise people in your personal life about choices. If you want to become a massage therapist, chances are you already have a healing touch. If you want to become a tour guide, chances are you already teach people about the history of things and know your city inside out. So, in reality, you already are who you want to be. You just haven't fully embraced it.

The next step is taking that leap of faith and putting yourself out there, on the ledge, in plain view of the world and then shouting "here I am" for all to hear. Begin by posting that blog that's been sitting in the folder on your laptop. Creating that video you've been thinking about putting up on YouTube. Lead a group discussion at a local venue. Take care of legalities by getting the training and applying for your business license. The key is to get moving and step into your power.

Once you do, a funny thing happens. You realize that you are who you want to be.
