There really isn’t much difference between achieving a fitness goal, a personal goal or a business goal. They all require the same key components. When I design a first-time athlete’s triathlon training program, for example, or set a business goal for myself, I start with the result I want and work my way back to discover the first step.

If you’re….

Going For the Gold

Dream Big You decided to go for it. But what – exactly – is “it”? The first step on your winning path is to Dream BIG . If we know what we want, it’s easier to figure out how to get it. More importantly, we will know if we got it. When we’re specific about a want, we can better articulate it. When you do state your heart’s desire, however, it might sound like a crazy goal. It is much easier to talk ourselves out of our goals than into them. But don’t give up! We decide what we really want. We envision it, commit to it and communicate it. And we celebrate as the universe opens the necessary doors (or windows) to make our dreams reality.

My Personal Play Book

Have a Game Plan After you decide your heart’s desire, you need a Game Plan. It is critical to take the time to design this action plan. Creating balance is essential in all areas of our lives, so be aware of how your action plan will impact other things, and design your plan accordingly. Each of us can do a specific action for a finite amount of time but in order to enjoy true success, the action must be sustainable. Create a schedule of when you will do the specific action required to achieve your goal and stick to that schedule. All too often, our initial excitement creates an almost frenetic energy, and we do too much, too soon. Burnout ensues, and we lose our motivation to complete the goal. Consistent action – large or small, day in and day out – brings huge results.

The Speed of the Leader

Got Coach? As we embark upon our goal we've done all the right things. The plan is written and we’re working it, but what seemed like a good idea at the time is not feeling so good at the moment. There will always be stumbling blocks, but don’t let them trip you up. This is the time to find someone you respect and admire to be your mentor, your coach. Align yourself with people who are going where you want to go or are already there. Learn everything you can from them but make sure to stay true to yourself and your goal. Most people genuinely want us to succeed and are willing to help however they can. Sometimes their support is a pat on the back or a kick in the butt and other times it’s much-needed strategic advice. A coach can help us decide, for example, if we want to push past an inevitable stumbling block or try an alternate route. Regardless of the capacity, coaches and mentors provide what we need.

Practice Makes Perfect

Taking Responsibility We can’t always control the outcome but we can control how we respond to the outcome. We are responsible for staying in action and moving toward our goal. Don’t let stumbling blocks stop your forward progress. Overcome them by training your weaknesses while playing to your strengths. During triathlon training, for example, someone may be a strong runner and a good bike rider, but a weak swimmer. Since it’s a triathlon, however, they need to swim, bike and run – not just run. Consequently, we spend most of the training time focused on swimming. By strengthening your weakness, you become stronger and more powerful overall.

Time Out

Self Care It’s hard to remember, and even harder to do. But if you take time to care for yourself, you will actually take better care of your family, friends and customers. Take a close look at financially successful, high-energy people, and there’s a good chance you’ll find they exercise for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week; get 7.5 hours of sleep each night; eat 4 to 5 healthy meals everyday; and take regular vacations. They genuinely take care of themselves. Our physical health DIRECTLY impacts our fiscal health. When we take care of ourselves, we have more energy for everything, including our business and personal lives. The return on investment is huge and dramatic.

Be Your Own Team Captain

You are a role model, although you might not be aware of it. People are constantly searching for role models; they want examples to follow and behaviors to pattern. Since you don’t always know who is watching and how your choices may impact them, ask yourself, ”what kind of role model do I want to be?” Be your own team captain. Let go of those ‘what’s in it for me’ thoughts and really embrace the power of being of service to others. When we get ourselves out of the way and focus on other people, it is amazing what the universe will bring into our lives. Here’s a great way I learned to be my own team captain and progress toward my goals from Mikelann Valterra: spend 1/3 of your time with people who are where you came from, 1/3 with people who are where you’re at and 1/3 with people who are where you want to be. Choosing to live this way means we’re constantly being lifted up while we lift up others – a win-win for everyone.

You have the tools, so go out there and Get Your Game On! - Dream big, create your action plan, practice, take time out, be the best team captain you can, and Go for the Gold! Follow these simple steps to choose where you end, rather than end somewhere you didn’t want to be. And remember to get out of the way and let the Universe figure out how to make your dreams come true.
