It is very much a part of our culture to try to be bigger and better, to grow as fast as we can, to do, to produce, to make a huge splash. It’s easy to carry this attitude and brashness to the world of your business. Many people run their businesses this way and it seems to work for them. Others try it and find themselves losing their values, ethics, and sense of self.

I believe every business is an entity onto itself and we are stewards of our businesses. I define a business as any enterprise we engage in for which we receive payment of some kind. By this definition, counselors are in business and so are ministers! Every business has a deva or angel who is responsible for the overall purpose and functioning of the business. It is our responsibility to contact the soul or overriding energy of our business and discover what it wants to do, when it wants to do it, and how. I know this can sound strange if you don't normally think in these terms, but stay with me a little longer.

This mindset is in direct contradiction to most business practices which state we should tell the business what to do. It is also in direct contradiction to many metaphysical teachings which tell us to take control of everything in our lives and design them the way we want them to be. Flowing with our business means finding out what the business wants to do and then using all of our powers and abilities to accomplish that.

Some people get nervous about this because they think it means they might have to do some things they would rather not do. Although that is possible, it is unlikely. If we have been paired up with a particular business, it is because we have the talents and abilities for it. Generally, whatever it wants to do will pretty much work for us as well.

Sometimes a business wants to actively grow and branch out while at others it wants to rest and enjoy feeling its roots growing slowly, gaining a firmer stand wherever it is. If we are experiencing frustration with our business, it could be that we are out of sync with what it wants to do. We might be trying to push it when it really wants to take off in new directions.

It is important to get in touch with our business’ deva or angel. If this is a new concept for you, or one you have forgotten, start setting aside ten to fifteen minutes a day strictly for communication with your business. Write down ideas you are given. Ask questions about any difficulties or challenges you are facing. Try “channeling” your business in writing and see what it says to you!

Here are some questions to get your started:

What is your purpose? What are we trying to accomplish together?

Do you want to grow right now or do you want to rest? If you want to grow, in what way? What do I need to do to facilitate this?

Is there anything I should be doing differently right now?

What changes, if any, do you want to make?

If there are specific challenges being faced, ask what can be done about them.

If a decision needs to be made, ask for input and ideas.

For a particularly delightful session, have a “meeting” with your business, yourself and your personal guides and angels. This one takes a bit more time, but is great for developing your listening muscles and expanding your concepts of what is possible.

Remember to write down everything or talk into a tape recorder because this is the sort of information easily lost when your attention returns to the day-to-day details of life. When you try doing this for awhile, I think you’ll discover that working this way is actually a lot of fun and very exciting. It is light-years beyond worrying, fretting, and trying to carry the load yourself. Although some of your initial answers might be colored by your ego, continued practice with the technique will help you break through to a purer level of information.

We’re never alone with any aspect of our lives, but especially not with our businesses. We are in partnership with them. Doesn’t it make sense to use every possible form of help available? Instead of running your business and telling it what to do, try reversing the process. Flow with your business for a change, listen to it, and see what happens.

What if you could talk to your business and find out what it wants to do and be more of a partner with your business instead of being its slave-driver? Quirky? Strange? Woo-woo. Maybe. But it works.
