Use the Telephone to Get (and Deliver)
"Just in Time" Learning

Finding time to attend courses and do fieldwork is hard enough, not to mention finding time to get to and from course locations. Fortunately, telephone technology and ever-decreasing long distance rates make phone-based learning a practical, appealing alternative to face-to-face encounters.

Whether you are interested in creating telephone learning opportunities for your organization, leading classes, or attending classes you are bound to have some questions and concerns. The following points, gleaned from over a year's experience leading teleclasses, address common issues and their solutions.

-- Won't I miss the sense of connection and community I get in face-to-face learning?
Creating community in a teleclass is not only possible, it is extremely satisfying. It won't happen by accident, however. A skilled teleclass leader will enroll all participants in creating community using brief exercises tailored to this purpose.

-- What keeps everyone from talking at once?
This is a common concern, and one that is readily alleviated when the leader introduces teleclass protocol to all participants, and then skillfully coaches the group in the listening skills that prevent chaos. One point of protocol that addresses this include asking each person to state his/her name before asking a question or making a remark. If two or more people speak at once, the leader can then support order by saying, "Rhonda, you first. Then Jim, then Kate."

-- I'm afraid one or two people will dominate the calls.
A skilled teleclass leader, just as a skilled classroom teacher, is responsible for encouraging everyone to share. One effective response to an exuberant participant is, "Thank you, Andrew. Your enthusiasm is infectious. Let's hear from someone else who may have another take on this." In addition, many leaders choose to limit class size.

-- I'm afraid I won't be able to focus or follow on the phone as well as in person.
Intentionality, physical setting and managing outside stimuli are key to effectively focusing during a teleclass. Prior to each class meeting, set the clear intention to be fully present. (2) Express your intention by setting up the learning environment. Make choices that ensure privacy and quiet. Have the results of any assignments on hand, and be prepared to take notes (if that is your learning style). Finally, minimize distractions by moving away from the computer or from other visual stimuli that might steal your attention from the class.

-- Won't my long distance bill skyrocket?
There are numerous long distance programs available in the US (and more and more abroad) that offer rates as low as five cents a minute. Shop for a good program and you will spend $3 to $6 on a one-hour class session.

-- How do I know the instructor is qualified?
Ask about the instructor's training as a teleclass leader. (For example, I have attended two teleclass leader programs, and was among the first 100 people to receive the Certified Teleclass Leader designation from teleclass.com.) Also, evaluate testimonials from other students or ask for references. Finally, look for a guarantee. For example, I cheerfully refund 100% of the class fee if a student is dissatisfied.
