Metaphysics of Business Part 8: Synchronicity Happens.

I’d just arrived in my office to sort out phone messages. On the answering machine were various requests for services and then, this one: "Hello, this is Belle H., visiting from Southern Georgia. I found you via Google. I am looking for a spiritual teacher. Please call." Intrigued, I admittedly skipped over several other clients’ messages to call her. She answered and spoke as if she were walking and talking at the same time: "Yes, I am in town for a month. May I visit you soon?" I said I was fairly booked up, but then for some reason, stated: "I am in my office right now, where are you?" She was walking from a B & B five miles out of town, and was currently a few blocks away. I invited her to stop by and visit, and thus started an amazing business relationship. We’ve been working together intensively while she is here. During our initial visit, I asked her: "How did you find me?" Her tale of synchronicity: "I’m a teacher at a private school in S. Georgia, but my true fascination is spirituality, since I’ve been having some unusual spiritual experiences. I am also teaching a spirituality/religious studies class this Fall, and wanted to do some research. Recently, I had the opportunity to move out of my small apartment into more spacious accommodations, but would have had to pay quite a bit more for it. For some reason, my intuition told me to not make the move, instead go on a journey. So I thought about going to the Pacific Northwest, because I had always wanted to travel here.  I Googled "Washington cottages", and got the name of this incredible B&B I’m staying at outside this sweet little town. The owner has been so kind, she has driven me everywhere, and I have plenty of space to read and meditate and be. During one of my meditations, I had the thought: 'I need a spiritual teacher now'. So I Googled "spiritual advisor, LaConner", and your name came on top of the list, on a biz-something site (Biznik.com). I liked what I saw, and here I am." Now, had she actually typed into Google, "spiritual teacher, LaConner", she would have come up with a variety of nonsense; I tried it. But something "told" her to type out the word "advisor" and that did the trick. Lest you think this is an unusual way to have business come my way, I beg to differ. Over my 24 years in business as a spiritual counselor, most of my work comes from referral or synchronicity: Someone is looking for someone like me, and finds me via all sorts of unforeseen hints and incidents. I factor in the force that is synchronicity into my business planning, and find it is just as useful a concept as any other more "practical” factor such as budgeting, marketing and so forth. The term synchronicity was coined by famous Swiss Psychologist Carl Jung, and is defined as "the coincidental occurrence of events and especially psychic events that seem related but are not explained by conventional mechanisms of causality." Another good definition: "Synchronicity is a "happen chance" that occurs that is in perfect alignment with your thoughts or ideas. Often mistaken as coincidences, synchronicities are universal nods, confirming that you are on the right track. Synchronicities can also be road signs that help steer you on to the right track if you are feeling confused or lost in some way." (from healing.about.com). How to allow synchronicity to work its magic in your business? May I suggest: <ol> </ol> <ul> <li>Make space for the unscheduled and unknown. As a solopreneur, I have found that it is always worthwhile to have some space in my calendar for unforeseen opportunities to come my way. Had I been too booked up to spend time with Belle, I would have lost a valuable client who will probably send me other clients. Because I create space for the unexpected, I’ve had “left field” opportunities and even unexpected income sail into my life.</li> <li>Use your intuition in your business planning. As a tool, intuition is oft neglected when it comes to the everyday reality of sustaining a viable business. I find when I pay attention to my intuition, synchronicity is engaged, and I am at the right place at the right time for some of my most long-term business engagements. I have been known to cancel certain engagements I thought I had to do, only to make room for an unexpected event that brought in more money and was truer to my passion. I’ve followed my intuition and made calls to strangers, looked up things on the internet, and even once picked up a newspaper on an intuitive hint, only to find a person I collaborate with now. Your intuition is the key to the door of synchronous opportunities: always trust it.</li> <li>Envision, envision, envision! Get clear about what you are creating. This is a basic metaphysical principle well worth remembering. The clearer your “order” to the universe, the more opportunities for a synchronistic universe to line up what you desire. Here’s a fun exercise called Treasure Mapping: Have handy a stack of magazines, scissors, a glue stick, and a piece of poster paper. Sit quietly, or put on inspirational music, close your eyes and ask: “What do I see in my business?” Open eyes, and rapidly leaf through the magazines, cutting out images and words you are attracted to. Don’t think too much while doing this; just let your intuition be your guide. From the stack of pictures and words, make a collage on the poster paper, and place the Map where you can see it every day. Every once in awhile I am amazed at how much has come into my life via my envisioning. Books, money, resources, contacts, allies, office spaces: creating what I want to see in my business life comes from my detailed visions.</li> <li>Mostly, relax. Be open. Don’t try to "make" things happen. Allow them to happen. Allow for success, for abundance, for life-long lessons. Allowance accepts what is, and then works from there. If synchronicity is being at the right place at the right time, allowing for synchronicity in your business creates the spaciousness to be open to the synchronicities in life. </li> </ul> <ol> </ol> <ol> </ol> <ol> </ol> Addendum synchronicity tale: My new client Belle did not find my name via my own webpage—no, my webpage would have been ten pages down the line in the Google search. She found me on the number one line via my Biznik site. Had I not trusted my intuition and made sure I was a supporting member of Biznik, we would not have met.
