Forgive the pun (and not a very good one at that) in the title of this article. I wanted to make the topic of this article as accessible as I could, and also a little humorous. But the metaphor has a direct link to Wallace D. Wattles' premises in the "Science of Getting Rich".

Wally speaks repeatedly about the difference between the Competitive and Creative ways of pursuing wealth. These are the first two C's that we need to learn about navigating. But even before we discuss navigating these; we must examine the idea of Navigation itself.

My handy pop-up dictionary defines Navigation as the process or activity of accurately ascertaining one's position and planning and following a route. The route is of course to a selected destination. In the SOGR the implied destination is Riches or Wealth. Yet the journey through different C's will experience distintcly different territory.

The first C; the Competitive is the one we are most aware of due to the fact that we are living in a competitive society. Our national pastimes are competitive, our heroes become such by competing successfully, and most importantly all of our institutions of governance and commerce have competition at their cores. Competition is the very emblem of 'Scarcity Thinking.' Just like it says in all the "Highlander" movies and television show, "There can be only one!"

As a consequence, winning becomes the only thing that matters. We are adversaries in everything. Our entire legal system is based upon adversarial conflict. Plaintiff vs. Defendant, has within its orientation; winner or loser. Truth and justice become by-products in such an environment.

I received a message from Michael Moore, the Documentary Producer today. It was related to his upcoming film about our Capitalist system. In the message he talked about Bernie Madoff. Mike said, "...no person will provide a more iconic face of this end-of-capitalism-as-we-know-it year than Bernard Lawrence Madoff.

Which is too bad. Yes, he stole $65 billion from some already quite wealthy people. I know that's upsetting to them because rich guys like Bernie are not supposed to be stealing from their own kind. Crime, thievery, looting that's what happens on the other side of town. The rules of the money game on Park Avenue and Wall Street are comprised of things like charging the public 29% credit card interest, tricking people into taking out a second mortgage they can't afford, and concocting a student loan system that has graduates in hock for the next 20 years. Now that's smart business! And it's legal. That's where Bernie went wrong his scheming, his trickery was an outrage both because it was illegal and because he preyed on his side of the tracks.

Had Mr. Madoff just followed the example of his fellow top one-percenters, there were many ways he could have legally multiplied his wealth many times over. Here's how it's done. First, threaten your workers that you'll move their jobs offshore if they don't agree to reduce their pay and benefits. Then move those jobs offshore. Then place that income on the shores of the Cayman Islands and pay no taxes. Don't put the money back into your company. Put it into your pocket and the pockets of your shareholders. There! Done! Legal!"

This is the purest illustration of the Competitive way of getting rich that I have ever seen. Winning (getting rich) is all that matters and fairness means nothing. When we sail upon this C; the territory we pass through is filled with storms, reefs, and creatures within the water who would devour us.

Our friend Wally teaches us that we need not reach Riches through this course. We can instead sail through a different C; Creativity. He says in no uncertain terms; "THERE IS A THINKING STUFF FROM WHICH ALL THINGS ARE MADE, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe. A thought in this substance produces the thing that is imaged by the thought. A person can form things in his thought, and by impressing his thought upon formless substance can cause the thing he thinks about to be created. In order to do this, a person must pass from the competitive to the creative mind. Otherwise he cannot be in harmony with formless intelligence, which is always creative and never competitive in spirit."

In amplifying these concepts Wally also teaches, "NO ONE IS KEPT POOR BECAUSE OTHER PEOPLE HAVE MONOPOLIZED THE WEALTH and have put a fence around it....No one is kept in poverty by shortness in the supply of riches; there is more than enough for all.....The visible supply is practically inexhaustible, and the invisible supply really is inexhaustible. Everything you see on earth is made from one original substance, out of which all things proceed. New forms are constantly being made, and older ones are dissolving, but all are shapes assumed by one thing. There is no limit to the supply of formless stuff, or original substance...Ten thousand times as much as has been made might still be made, and even then we should not have exhausted the supply of universal raw material. No one, therefore, is poor because nature is poor or because there is not enough to go around."

Now truly this is the C to navigate through. It is filled with perfect weather, smooth and tranquil waters, and ever increasing abundance to sustain us upon our journey. On this course an unlimited number of travelers can each achieve riches and can celebrate each other's success.

There is another C, which Wally infers, but does not name as such. It is Cooperation. This third C is in actuality a part of the C of Creativity. In the C of Cooperation, we actively seek others who are traveling toward the Port of Riches and travel together with them. We reinforce each other's navigation and enhance each other's observation. We are able to pool and share resources and most importantly vision. When we become challenged or even discouraged we have others who will supply us with encouragement. And in worst cases if our engines fail; these others can even give us a tow.

So you only have to reflect upon these different journeys to see which C you should navigate through and set your course.

SUCCESS WITHOUT FEAR!
