The Metaphysics of Business, Part 5: Beyond *The Secret*

I looked at the answering machine in my office awhile back—and it looked right back at me. No numbers were blinking on the digital message reminder. The phone sat as still as stone, and it was already mid-week in a long week of no appointments, nothing to schedule. I wondered, for the five hundredth time in my 24 year business: Did this mean something? Was this It, the time when I should call it quits? Or… Was it time to do something else in my business? Create a class? Write an article? Re-look at my marketing plan? Write my book? The list could have gone on and on, but I made my choices: I worked on my taxes, set to editing my husband’s book, and wrote an article for Biznik.  The next day had no messages, and the next as well, so I set my business intentions for the month, wrote a chapter in my book, and went for a long walk on a sunny day.  Then, out of the blue, a number of calls and emails came in, with bookings and all sorts of invitations to share my services.    What in the world happened? What changed? Ala the movie The Secret, did I all of a sudden tap into the Law of Attraction? Well, maybe.  Just a very few years back, I would have let the thought, "Is this it?" bloom into a full blown panic about my business. I would have jumped into frantic activity…making calls, emailing anyone I would know to drum up business…all in a willy-nilly fashion that looked busy, busy, busy. But so does a hamster in the proverbial caged wheel. The activity would be much ado about nothing, and with consequential results. The Law of Attraction was at work all right: I was attracting a bunch of stress and panic. But then I'd pause, breathe, take a look at the opportunities presented with my freed up time, and press a figurative reset button. Nowadays I step back and consider my options sooner,  and more thoughtfully, more intentionally. I do not panic when the phone doesn’t ring or the email box looks rather empty. Instead I celebrate having the time to consider what I truly mean to create, and attract more of what I truly desire. Law Of Attraction case study:  A client of mine was the owner of a metaphysical bookstore. She was a newly minted entrepreneur, sincere and earnest, but not well versed in the vicissitudes of running a business. Though she read all the latest spiritual books, her business was not going well. She was disorganized. She was always behind on her bills and went further and further into debt. Yet, she had post-it notes plastered all over with affirmations such as, "I receive $10,000 now!" and "I deserve lots of money!” Even so, her well intentioned life collapsed around her, and when her store’s doors closed for good, she railed against the unfairness of the universe, and left the spiritual path. Here was a spiritual person doing her best, but the power of The Secret did not seem to work for her….or did it? According to the Law of Attraction, the basis for The Secret and the Abraham Teachings: "That which is like unto itself is drawn....whether it's something wanted or unwanted…." Sounds simple, right? Yet we are complicated and unconscious beings most times, so our creations are often a surprise to us. In the movie The Secret, there are scenes of people in the act of desiring: a woman stares at an expensive necklace in a store window; a guy desires a fancy house, etc. There are stories of manifesting:  someone manifests his dream house, and someone heals an illness, someone else manifests disastrous mishaps. Yet, the movie only goes so far into divulging what is at work here, so I’d like to lay bare what I believe is its ultimate secret. The consciousness behind The Secret: I recently attended the incredible Science and Consciousness Conference which brought participants from all over the globe and all walks of life to explore the interrelationship between science and spirituality. At some point in the conference, I came to a conclusion which might be the basis of The Secret: We are conscious beings in a conscious universe, co-creating with all of creation. Evidence of this renewed discovery was everywhere. Almost all the keynote and workshop presenters pointed to this from the lenses of their respective disciplines: Physicists proclaimed boldly: The universe’s base material is consciousness, not matter as we have believed (See Amit Goswami’s brilliant work on the scientific proof of God’s existence). Biologists, psychologists, medical doctors, film makers, geologists, and theologians stated as much. It was amazing. My faith in a conscious universe took a quantum leap. Did I say the word faith? Yup, I most certainly did. It takes a leap of faith to honor an idea which, at first glance, swims against the tide of thousands of years of humanity’s belief systems. And yet, is the thought of a conscious universe so far off from those very belief systems? Wisdom teachers from Jesus to Buddha and many, many others have pointed to the “kingdom within.” Physicists and cell biologists have noted that there is something else going on than just a mechanistic universe. As we humans woke up to this, vast amounts of knowledge heretofore unrealized helped us make leaps in our technology and thinking, the likes of which this world had never imagined. But technology alone without co-commitment conscious awareness is a road to certain demise: My faith in conscious beings co-creating with a conscious universe resolves that disconnect for me. It is a relief to believe this way again. And The Law of Attraction points to this basic faith. In these times of economic collapse, we are reaping what we have sown as a society: What has come about through greed, selfishness and temporal thinking (in other words: temporary accumulation and temporary fixes) is attractng the corresponding checks and re-balancing. The recession is the fruits of our short-sightedness, but we can also see it as an opportunity: We can step aside for a moment, look at the situation with new eyes, and co-create with a universe filled with infinite possibility. Among entrepreneurs, the most successful and enlivened ones know this, and use their ability to attract and co-create as consciously as possible. Rather than just a single bottom line of "profit above all", conscious entrepreneurs consider sustainability, community building, service, and living out one’s purpose as integral measures of success. The secret is out: Get clear about your true desires and create the business of your dreams with the help of an attentive universe. The world will be better for your creations. 2009-04-18T05:22:20Z
