Just this morning when I went to wake my son up to get ready to go to school, "I don't want to go to school today!" he moaned. Funnily enough I could empathise with him: I wanted to lay in late also. You may have days when you don't want to get to work, or something else that you have to do or should do. Wouldn't you agree that you feel more tired at that time?

So what are the things that can make you feel tired, as if you were running on a low battery.

SMALL TENSIONS: When faced with a major crisis, you are fully conscious with all your resources available. Small tensions can't be identified and dealt with. Nagging has the same effect. These can tire you down much more than major ones. Some people feel as if they have a flu when they don't want to be somewhere, but have to: when told the occasion is cancelled or that they don't have to be there, the flu vanishes!

STANDING: When you walk, one leg gets to rest half the time. With a brisk walk, the added effect of endorphin release is invigorating. Do I need to remind you what it feels like after standing in a queue, especially for something you don't quite relish? Standing in a queue can be far more tiring than walking.

STUCK IN A TRAFFIC JAM: Tiring, but you can't do much, except perhaps listen to someting motivational, favourite music, sports commentary or a fvaourite show.

EXTRAVAGANT EXPENDITURE: When you spend more than you can afford, you may feel fatigued. Doubt and uncertainty produce nerve and muscle exhaustion as much as strenuous exercise.

NEGLECTED HUNGER AND THIRST: Our system depend on glucose for energy, and any drop in circulating glucose will be tiring. Water helps move nutrients and waste in the body, so drink water regularly, and eat a small amount of a healthy snack when you feel hungry.

HAVING TO MAKE IMPORTANT DECISIONS AT THE END OF A WORKING DAY: If this makes you tired, better postpone this to the following morning. You would have slept over the problem, and your unconscious mind have whispered you an answer.

The following can help you to cope with tiredness:

DO WHAT YOU HATE FIRST: This won't be there to nag you and other tasks will seem easier. Dodgng a job gives twice the fatigue: from dreading it and from doing it.

RAISE YOUR FEET: Resting for ten minutes or so with your feet at hip level has been found refreshing. Perhaps this helps waste products to flow away from the legs and feet.

REST AND LENGTH OF SLEEP: Recent figures show that nine hours of sleep are desirable. Restful sleep is refreshing and recent evidence shows it can protect against diabetes. If you can't sleep, don't fret over it because worry will keep you awake. Relax instead, as relaxed rest has been shown to restore energy.

Meditation, yoga and mental breaks also help you to relax.

SIESTA: Many successful people have developed a habit of a power-nap. Sit and relax after lunch, ensuring there won't be any disturbance; you may doze of for a minute or so but will get refreshed. A half hour nap after lunch has been shown to as effective as a three hour sleep at night.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY CLOCK: Some perform best in the mornings; they sleep best in the early part of the night. Others are at their best in the early afternoon or evening; they sleep best during the last part of night. They are best rising late and working late.
