Is your business your life?

OK, out front this is not a sales pitch, I am not really promoting my business just want to share some ideas with you. I have been a full time cycling coach for 10 years, only a business owner for 4, so this article is about fitness, not business, although I think you will see the connection.

Do you want more energy? Is your business sucking the life from your veins and leaving you no time to maintain relationships or other key areas of your life? Can you keep your current pace of work going for as long as it takes? Can you sleep for 4 hours and get up and keep cranking? I have some solutions to these questions won by hard knocks.

I train people for a living. I see all kinds of people, from couch potatoes to elite-hard core athletes looking for the edge. I love working with all kinds of people and being part of enhancing their health. The funny thing is that for all the hundreds of people I have coached since 1994 for Lance Armstrong's coach and now my own business, I don't see many business owners come to me for help. Why?

I became a business owner 4 years ago and can attest to one thing: if I am not healthy and energetic, my business suffers. The people who take the time to see me are typically successful entreprenuers who have backed off on their business, sold it, worked for Microsoft, or work a stable job for an established business.

I have a team of 8 coaches and an office admin that work for my Company. I am learning how to run a business just like I learned to race bikes...read everything I can find, look for mentors and drive, drive, drive! If you are in the same boat I wanted to share a few ideas that have been helpful to me:

1. Use 1 hr classes to get my workouts - if I schedule it I do it, so I either lead or take 3 classes a week, and that keeps my engine tuned up.

2. Stay hydrated and start each day with a glass of warm water to be sure I get a jump on it. if you want to take it further add a squeeze of lemon to get alkaline. Fatigue, headache and spaciness is often caused my dehydration. Drink and stay sharp!

3. Carry whole food bars in you car and at the office. Small, handy, portable meals are key to keep my energy rolling, buy a box or two and put them where you can grab them. Big meals slow you down.

4. Have it all. Balance, I wouldn't have made it this far and still be married if I didn't prioritize and schedule time for: wife, kid, family, friends, god, myself. What good is it to reach the finish line and turn around and see that you are alone? One phone call a week, one dinner, meditation or reading spirtual stuff for 30 minutes. I could have grown my company faster but long term whole life satisfaction is the key, so keep your whole life growing, it doesn't take that much time.

Even taking a few of these small things seriously can make a shift over time. I believe business is like a bike race, it takes endurance, motivation and proper care of the bod. It doesn't happen overnight and each day is another stage of the race.

OK, go get em and have a fantastic week!

Coach Craig
