Hi Joe, really looking forward to this. Have been trying to find one I can make.
And from the previous one's, they seem to be filling up, so it looks like a much needed event.
Also looking forward to finally meeting you!

How do you succeed as a Biznik event host?
You've hosted an event, or you're considering it. You've run into some challenges. Maybe you've had some successes. It's time to stop trying to figure it out all by yourself. Let's collaborate to solve our challenges and share our successes.
Gather 'round with fellow Biznik event hosts. First we'll take a few minutes to introduce ourselves and our motivation for hosting events. Are you wanting to:
After introductions, I'll take a few minutes to offer a perspective I'm discovering at the heart of successful event hosting. My intention is to help guide your collaboration toward greater success for everyone.
Then we'll gather in small groups to share a current challenge or question we have. We will choose one challenge at a time to focus on, and by brainstorming, sharing new perspectives, telling stories, and perhaps being silly, we will work together to come up with one or more approaches to meet each person's challenge.
Possible Ingredients of Our Conversation:
Deciding what type of event to host
Choosing a focus that appeals to the community
Writing a compelling event listing
Promoting your event on Biznik (and outside of Biznik)
Building interest and anticipation before the event
Facilitating a great experience for your attendees
Following up after the event
And I'm sure there are ingredients I haven't even thought of. Let's be honest, hosting an event is a big deal. But we can learn from one another what works and what doesn't, and discover our own personal formula for success.
For the last half hour, we'll bring things back to the big group and share our small-group discoveries.
And What's the Secret to Turning Event Hosting Success into Business Success?
Ah, now that's the real question! We see that some of us are filling our events. But how well are we doing at turning that success into business? That's what it's all about, right?
I think we're in the early stages of developing the expertise to take this amazing community and the opportunity to host events, and turn it into business success for each one of us. I'd like to see us accelerate this learning by sharing our wisdom, by collaborating and making our ever-expanding expertise available to the wider community.
My intention is to make this an ongoing event, and over time to compile a "Best Practices" guide for Biznik event hosts. By contributing your ideas and experience, you'll be helping the entire Biznik community grow stronger.
LOCATION: We'll be meeting downtown in the Park Place conference room, on the 6th floor. The building is conveniently located by entrance and exit ramps to and from I-5 in both directions. (The mark on the Google map is misleading. If you zoom in, you can see a building on the SE corner of 6th and University. That's Park Place.) And because the event is midday, we shouldn't have any problem with traffic. Plus, there's parking in the building (expect up to $10 for a couple hours - but the event is free) and at several more affordable places less than two blocks away.
......................................................................
Your host for this event has been a member of Biznik since December 2005, was one of the early Biznik event hosting pioneers, and has recently served as Biznik's Events Coordinator. He is also trained in various group facilitation techniques, and received his MA in Whole Systems Design from Antioch with an emphasis on facilitating transformative learning experiences.

If a space opens up, I'm interested in attending. Happy New Year everyone!
Heads up: I'll be checking with Mosaic on Monday the 5th about reserving the Den for our discussion. If it's free and they let me reserve it, I'll open up the event for whoever wants to come.
My thought had been to keep the group small to keep discussion focused. But if we wind up with a larger group, I'll go with a different plan to help us get the most out of the entire group's creativity and wisdom.
Check back by Tuesday morning if you're hoping to get in here.
UPDATE: Want to get in? I've been able to get more space for our discussion in the Mosaic Den for the January 7th and 21st events. Hope to see you there!
UPDATE: More room in this one. I'll be posting a change of venue very soon. The new space will be downtown at a convenient location.
Upgrade to new space is done. I've also extended the time to 2:30.
I'm looking forward to this!
If a space opens up please let me know.
Thank you, Lilian
I'll start planning the next one soon. Probably these will be monthly from now on. Stay posted...
Joe, Can I sneak in? I have info for you on starting a non profit and thought I'd tell you about it on Wednesday.
Joe, I'd love to come to this if space opens up. I'll check back about the 28th. Otherwise next time. Thanks.
Some lucky person can have my space! I won't be able to make this event, but plan on coming to another in the near future.
I guess I am the lucky one... just slipped in! So, it will be at the Mosaic Coffee? on 4401 2nd Ave NE? Or the upgrade was to Park Place? Just a bit confused...:p
Just to be clear: the location is at Park Place as described. The event was originally scheduled for Mosaic, but due to outrageous demand I moved it. <grin>
Hey Joe,
It looks like I won't be able to make it after all. My little one is sick. I'll sign up for the next one. See you then.. and thanks for a great event opp!
Thanks for the clarification. See you tomorrow!
Does anyone know of a place to park in the area?
Hi Debra,
You can park under the Park Place building, entrance on 6th. Or across the street under the Plymouth Congregational Church, entrance on University. Or a number of other lots in the area. Or on the street. Good luck!
Joe,
I apologize for the late cancelation as I was really looking forward to attending and participating in this event. Please let me know when you host this event again.
Thanks, David
Sad to miss the folks who can't make it: David, April, Ritama, Lynn, others. I promise I'll be hosting another one soon.
Profuse apologies Joe -- park place ... pacific place ... what's the difference?? The difference is missing the event!!! My total bad and my big loss!!
Great event, Joe. Great facilitation, great core subject matter and ideas.
Much Thanks, Ari
I second Ari's comments Joe. I learned a lot and feel the alignment coming on... Thanks!
Excellent event. I liked that the combination of small group work and larger group presentation/facilitation by you. Thank you!

Thanks so much for a great event today, Joe!
I learned a lot necessary to host my first Biznik event, and it was so valuable to hear the needs of other Biznikers for venues!!! I'm really looking forward to getting more connected to Biznik events through hosting them here at SPACE. :)
Best, Emily
Thank you sooo much everyone for your awesome participation and contribution. Events like this one are incredibly fun to host: set it up and get out of the way. Amazing Biznik members take care of the rest!
Joe, thanks so much for putting this together. Great info, great people, so Biznik!

Michelle, we definitely missed you! I gotta get the next one going soon.
Joe, I have to say I learned a lot on how to create informative and successful events from this meeting. I enjoyed the small discussion groups that you set up. Please continue because I would like to attend again. I would recommend this event to anyone in BizNik.
Thanks again Phil
Joe, great event - thanks.
I like the idea of repeating the event. Perhaps it could be split into two events, one for beginners and one for experienced hosts, or set up tables for birds of a feather. The tables could cover specific questions or levels of experience. My preference would probably be for the tables, but I think there is benefit from mixing experience too.

Great event Joe! I am glad I didn't miss it. I left energized and inspired. I also had fun. :)
Thanks once again Joe you are Masterful at creating the synergy where Creativity and Inspiration come together! I'm looking forward to Biznik's new additions! Your ability to be present is allowing a lot of people to grow!
Thanks, Joe. I am realtively new to biznik and this is my second event. I truly benefited from participating and took away some helpful tips from you and my table partners.
For anyone else reading this, if you are new to the world of solo-preneurship, get connected with bizniks soon! Attending the events is a boost and reconnects you with your purpose and why you chose to go on your own. And you meet the coolest people!
Fantastic event, Joe. Well done! You developed a truly wonderful way to present this material. Whether you're experienced with leading seminars or brand new to organizing people inside a community, all the material that was covered seemed relevant. Let's find a way to get this stuff out to Biznik members in other cities and on the web site!
Joe - Thank you for an amazing event! I signed up for your 'offer'. I think you have a way with presenting that meets with the vision that many of us share.
I would highly recommend this to everyone at Biznik to take.
Terrific event, Joe! Wonderful balance of information & people-to-people exchange that went beyond the usual "here's-what-I-do" download.
Aspiring event hosts should attend your future sessions just to watch how it's done! (And enjoy / learn from the experience, too, of course)
Linda
Thank you all for your lovely comments: Ari, Frith, Julie, emily, Bob, Phil, Mike, Banu, Banu, Karen, Page, Lara, Debra, and Linda. It's very gratifying to know the benefit is percolating outward and I can't wait to see what events you all create over the coming weeks.
I'm also realizing that after four weeks of experimenting, I hit on some things that really clicked this time. Tonight I'm outlining an article drawn from my experience. It will be like a case study illustrating the principles of facilitation design I used. I hope you'll find it useful.
Plus, I'm scheduling the next Best Practices in Hosting event - same basic idea - for the last week in February. Stay tuned!
Joe
OK: The next one's on February 25th. See you there!
Hi Joe, This is a great event topic and you did it well. Not overwhelming for newcomers (like me).
Loved the "photos as notes" solution, too.
