Event description

How do you succeed as a Biznik event host?

You've hosted an event, or you're considering it. You've run into some challenges. Maybe you've had some successes. It's time to stop trying to figure it out all by yourself. Let's collaborate to solve our challenges and share our successes.

Gather 'round with fellow Biznik event hosts. First we'll take a few minutes to introduce ourselves and our motivation for hosting events. Are you wanting to:

  • Build your business
  • Build your reputation
  • Grow your network
  • Have fun
  • Make a contribution
  • Practice for the big-time
  • Other

After introductions, I'll take a few minutes to offer a perspective I'm discovering at the heart of successful event hosting. My intention is to help guide your collaboration toward greater success for everyone.

Then we'll gather in small groups to share a current challenge or question we have. We will choose one challenge at a time to focus on, and by brainstorming, sharing new perspectives, telling stories, and perhaps being silly, we will work together to come up with one or more approaches to meet each person's challenge.

Possible Ingredients of Our Conversation:

  • Deciding what type of event to host

  • Choosing a focus that appeals to the community

  • Writing a compelling event listing

  • Promoting your event on Biznik (and outside of Biznik)

  • Building interest and anticipation before the event

  • Facilitating a great experience for your attendees

  • Following up after the event

And I'm sure there are ingredients I haven't even thought of. Let's be honest, hosting an event is a big deal. But we can learn from one another what works and what doesn't, and discover our own personal formula for success.

For the last half hour, we'll bring things back to the big group and share our small-group discoveries for some big insights for everyone.

And What's the Secret to Turning Event Hosting Success into Business Success?

Ah, now that's the real question! We see that some of us are filling our events. But how well are we doing at turning that success into business? That's what it's all about, right?

I think we're in the early stages of developing the expertise to take this amazing community and the opportunity to host events, and turn it into business success for each one of us. I'd like to see us accelerate this learning by sharing our wisdom, by collaborating and making our ever-expanding expertise available to the wider community.

My intention is to make this an ongoing event, and over time to compile a "Best Practices" guide for Biznik event hosts. By contributing your ideas and experience, you'll be helping the entire Biznik community grow stronger.

Comments from the last event on January 28

"Great facilitation, great core subject matter and ideas."

"I learned a lot and feel the alignment coming on... Thanks!"

"Excellent event. I liked the combination of small group work and larger group presentation/facilitation. Thank you!"

"I learned a lot on how to create informative and successful events from this meeting. I enjoyed the small discussion groups that you set up. Please continue because I would like to attend again."

"I left energized and inspired. I also had fun. :)"

"Joe you are Masterful at creating the synergy where Creativity and Inspiration come together!"

"Thank you for an amazing event! I think you have a way with presenting that meets with the vision that many of us share. I would highly recommend this to everyone at Biznik to take."

"Terrific event, Joe! Wonderful balance of information & people-to-people exchange that went beyond the usual "here's-what-I-do" download. Aspiring event hosts should attend your future sessions just to watch how it's done! (And enjoy / learn from the experience, too, of course)"

LOCATION: We'll be meeting downtown in the Park Place conference room, on the 6th floor. The building is conveniently located by entrance and exit ramps to and from I-5 in both directions. (The mark on the Google map is misleading. If you zoom in, you can see a building on the SE corner of 6th and University. That's Park Place.) And because the event is midday, we shouldn't have any problem with traffic. Plus, there's parking in the building (expect $12 to $13 for a couple hours - but the event is free) and at several more affordable places less than two blocks away. And of course, Metro is a great way to get downtown.

Your host for this event has been a member of Biznik since December 2005, was one of the early Biznik event hosting pioneers, and has recently served as Biznik's Events Coordinator. He is also trained in various group facilitation techniques, and received his MA in Whole Systems Design from Antioch with an emphasis on facilitating transformative learning experiences.

I just have to chime in and say, if you haven't done one of these, it's a Biznik must! Whether you are testing the events waters, have done a few, or a lot, you will walk away with some great ideas!

Hi, Joe and all, I wish I could come to this event, but I live in Bellingham and cannot attend that day. Something I am encouraging here in Bellingham is that folks choose only accessible sites for meetings when at all possible. If the site is NOT accessible to all abilities, then please state that clearly in the invite. This came up for me this Fall here in town after I had knee replacement surgery. A popular place for Biznik events has been the FREE meeting room of a local real estate office. The trouble is, it is up a steep flight of stairs - not at all accessible to anyone with a movement impairment. I was able to hobble up and down slowly, but someone with a walker or a wheelchair definitely could not. I have asked Lara Feltin, Biznik cofounder, about this. She said that Biznik cannot require this for events, but let's spread the word to be considerate of our fellow Biznikers who may have challenges with these things so it's truly a collaborative and inclusive event for all.

Thanks. Warm regards from the North, Rev. Meredith Ann Murray

Meridith: Yep, this space is ADA compliant all the way. I hope to see you at a future event.

I'm excited about the group that's taking shape. Should be great fun, and a productive afternoon!

I'm definitely considering another time slot Noreen. Considering perhaps a Tuesday evening next month.

I am looking forward to the event. I'm just learning about Biznik and look forward to meeting participants and sharing war stories.

This seems like a great way to network, to get to know one another and feel comfortable sharing leads.

See you all at the event.

Last month's was so great, that in some ways I want to go again!!!

With Joe's awesome facilitation methods, what you gain is certainly a gift from ALL of the Biznikers attending...therefore, each time will be a bit different I bet. If I didn't already have something scheduled, I would definitely try to make it again! Thanks Joe!

Thank you for such a high value event. I really took away a lot of good information that I can put to work right away. April is the month!

    Joe,

It was a pleasure meeting you. Now I feel confident that I know what I need to know to jump in there and hold an event. Thanks!

Hey, your promo at the end did not work for me. I did not get the red arrows and green arrows and what I'd get our of a session????? It seemed lame. (As a coach, I'd be kicking butt to clean that one up.)

Suzi, I'm glad you got some good info today. From what you shared about your business, I'm sure you have great value to share with the Biznik community. Go get 'em!

And thanks for your direct and honest feedback. I'll put it in the cooker and see what comes of it.

Another useful, motivating, "Joe" event. Everyone in our small group got some great ideas during the brainstorming. There was the right balance of "lecture" (lots of information about how events work), group interaction and networking.

Fabulous Event, Joe... the right people for teh event were there and our table of new friends had a blast! So much was there... I came with the question of what did I have to offer... and now I know and it will be GREAT!

Thanx for all of your help... You are a great facilitator ... you set great boundries and and encourage me to participate fully just by who you are at each event... Dawn

I look forward to our coaching session... phenomenal opportunity

Joe Shirley! You have a great presentation and I am so thrilled that you tried out your "new ideas" on this class! I thought everything worked great. Of course in the small group discussions, I got lucky and was in the "Power Group". Imagine! Dawn, Jane, Matt and ragsmadison each with their own ideas and then two NEW ONES that are going to become events, in addition to our own. Count me in! Enjoy the photo I've posted of (left to right) You, Dawn Mallory, another attendee, and Jane Blinka.

Joe, I reread my comment, and it sounds yucky and negative and that was not my intention. For that I apologize.

What I wanted to convey was that you had done such a great job of showing your skills and strengths, I was sitting there WANTING to be sold something! Felt disappointed that I did not "get" the offer.

Thanks, Joe. I came away with some very useful information. Those at my table, you, and the whole group helped me think of ways to promte my workshop and find Bizniks whoi really want help about self-publishing.

I think I understood your promo about public speaking training. If the speaker is not fully engaged with the audience, if he/she is distracted by self-doubts as many are, the audience can tell and it's less effective. Public speaking is a major phobia and anxiety in the general public, and even for Bizniks this must be a common concern.

I think I'm fine with public speaking as long as I am prepared. We shall see.

Afterwards I'll attend your event again!

    Hi Joe:

The first time that I checked my watch for the time, it was already 1:45! The time flew by because you are an incredibly engaging speaker. I think your gift is your comfort in front of others, and I was grateful for your willingness to share that you were experiencing an internal change. If you are familiar with the term "meta-communication," which is the ability of the speaker to view himself as he speaks, while continuing to present to the group, then that was what I saw. Great job, and I have a referral for you already.

    Cheers,

    Matt Gittleman

Your a great teacher. I felt that your example as an event host did as much to teach us as the actual material. You shared lots of energy and used your time well.

I believe everyone in our little group learned something about hosting an event. I look forward to another one of your events in the future.

Joe, thanks for hosting this event.

I'm glad that I attended this event before hosting a workshop myself. You presented helpful practical ideas in a structured manner supported by flexible interactive sessions.

Whoa, got a little behind on the comments here. Thank you all for your generosity. Fact is, what I did was create a clear container and got out of the way. All the good stuff came from all of you! And as Dawn and Rags alluded to, we sure did have a great group of smart, creative, supportive people in the room. In Biznik, it's really hard NOT to have a great group show up.

So go forth! Create fabulous, wondrous and value-laden events for all of us. (And ping me when you get yours in the calendar.)
