Event description

Want some new anecdotes for your next networking or client meeting?

Do unique headstones, quaint inscriptions and mysterious carvings pique your curiosity? Ever wonder about the interesting stone in that old cemetery you always drive by, but never visit?

Think the movie National Treasure was just blowing smoke?

Then indulge that inner history buff, genealogist, even conspiracy theorist at this fun Halloween Mixer combining Biznik networking opportunities with local cemetery lore. If you bring the curiosity, questions and business cards, we’ll provide the photos, stories and secrets to break the ice in the post-talk networking session.

Details:

  • Discussion: 11:00am – 12:00pm
  • Networking: 12.00 – 1.00pm
  • Parking – Available at the Bellevue Library

Here are a few tantalizers you can expect:

Headstones: a blacksmith’s anvil, a stone tree stump, an inscrutable jizo statue.

Carving interpretations: chain links, an armored knight, olive branches, Masonic symbols.

Destruction: vandalism, weathering & restoration attempts.

A community's history is seen in its oldest cemeteries and King County is no exception. Places such as Comet Lodge, Auburn Pioneer, Fall City and many others, patiently wait to share their stories to those willing to poke through the overgrown, scruffy weeds.

On Friday, October 16 from 11.00am – 12.00pm, we'll tell some of these stories.

This presentation is funded in part by 4Culture and Allied Arts Foundation of Seattle.

I'm bringing the required soundtrack: Blue Oyster Cult and Black Sabbath, peppered with Marilyn Manson for a little extra spice...the library should love that!

Or maybe the Grateful Dead? Okay I'll shut up now.

I'll look forward to this...one of the more unique (if not THE most unique) and intriguing events to come along in Biznik...well, since Biznik!

I'm very excited to be hosting this because it is so different. I think it's a great change of pace where people can relax, learn something new and still get to network.

You know, maybe Paul's idea could be integrated into the slideshow...?

    This sounds awesome!

Did I give you "library advice" on a biztalk? I'm having deja vu... If so, it looks like it worked out for you!

Hi Kate: Yes you did and it worked out great. I also recommended the same to Paul for his monthly Indexer's group meeting.

Paul, I went to Bellevue Regional yesterday and the two other rooms seat between 5-12 people. I think these are usually more available than the big one I snagged for our meeting so I'd recommend checking them out for future Indexer meetings.

Hey Gwynneth, thanks for the heads up, I'll look into that for our November Indexer's peer review...I recall that some of them have windows, and others don't...I might stop by to scout it out.

Soundtrack to the slide show? While you might be kidding, don't tempt a music buff - I might have to take you up on that! I'm sure we could brew up something both wicked and amusing!

Oh, and I meant to ask about the anvil...are you gonna be schlepping one of those big iron slugs into the library with you?

I'm sorry I'm going to miss this. I have always been a fan of old cemetaries and the history behind them. Unfortunately (fornunately for me) I have a closing scheduled at this same time. Maybe if you have great response, you will do it again.!
