Event description

Join us at beautiful Laurelhurst Park. Get out of the "office" for lunch, take in some fresh air and share some stimulating conversation!

Bring your own brown bag lunch (or lunch box). We'll find a shady spot to sit together and commune with nature while we munch our lunch.

One topic in particular that I would like everyone to think about and be prepared to discuss is, "What do I need to make my business explode in the next half of the year?"

The goal here is to get a group of people sharing ideas, dreams, and then holding each other accountable for creating an action step and carrying it out through the year. Let's help each other accomplish our goals!

With lunch, trees, grass, and smart people to talk with we should all be able to come away with at least one specific action and several acounta-buddies.

This is a loose, fun event, but please be on time so we can all benefit from shared brains. We'll try to wrap up around 12:30, so there will plenty of time for networking.

Playing on the jungle gym afterwards is encouraged.

Note: As the date gets closer, I'll post a comment with a more specific spot in the park to meet at.

David Yes- you have done it! And by some small miracle my schedule is still open at that time. I love Laurelhurst Park- one of my favorite places in town. I'll be there. Kaya

Excellent! I give you credit for the suggestion of Laurelhurst. It's a huge park and a beautiful place for lunch.

Hey David, I look forward to this experience. I believe wonderful things can happen when like minded people come together to support one another. And this seems to be a wonderful idea.

Missed you at SECP last thursday!

Mike Watters, I look forward to meeting you at the event. We seem to connect with animal people personally and professionally.

David, I invited a New Biznik Member to your Brown Bag. Her name is Charrisse Reents, I hope she follows through. I don't know her personally - yet! Looking forward to this event and seeing it grow to a comfortable amount of people. Roberta

Thanks, Roberta. It will be cool to welcome a new Bizniker in person.

I plan to invite some people personally as well. This should be an easy event to attend because:

    1. You know the food is good (you packed it!)
    2. We won't be crowded, no matter how many show.
    3. Um... it's free.

    See you there!

Oh - one thing I forgot to mention:

There is FREE wi-fi in the park!

So, if you want to make a day of it and extend your office before or after the event, it's an excellent opp!

Oh wow! Free wifi - sweet. I look forward to ti. Interesting how this plays into my new plan of gaining collaborators - even with those who are in my field, rising tide floats all boats experiment.

Thanks for the invite -- I've got it penciled in. Will have to be a shady spot, I'm sun-sensitive...one of the odd benefits of living in the NW. See you then.

David, Thank you for organizing this. I am a new Bizniker and colleague/friend of Clarice Dankers. She recommended that I come. Sounds great. I look forward to meeting people and brainstorming. I need the juice. Meet you next week. Kate

Alright, you roped me in. It is only a few blocks from my house after all. Just one question David - what happened to your clown nose??

  • David Billings
Posted by David Billings, Sandy, Oregon | Jun 25, 2008

    Cool, things are shaping up!

Clarice and Susan: Glad you can make it, we'll do what we can!

Kate: Welcome! We're all about the juice. This should be an energetic exchange.

Emma: Awesome! The clown nose? Um... I put that somewhere... let me see... it was just here...

David - I am soooooo sorry. I just realized as I was out and about that a non-profit client that I did some incredible pro-bono work for is taking me out to lunch - July 2nd. Damn! Hope you do another!

  • Kaya Singer
Posted by Kaya Singer, Portland, Oregon | Jun 26, 2008

    David

I go to Laurelhurst a lot and a good spot is on the Alder street side ( north) in the group area. It is in the trees, is shady and near the pond. Just an idea...

Christian- maybe you can switch days with your non-profit guy. it would be fun to have you there.

  • Roberta MacLaren
Posted by Roberta MacLaren, Gresham, Oregon | Jun 26, 2008

Christian - I second Kaya on the idea of switching days! Of course we are thinking of ourselves, or I guess I should speak for myself. I was looking forward to seeing you again.

And I think the idea is to keep a group going and growing to brainstorm with - I am psyched!

  • David Billings
Posted by David Billings, Sandy, Oregon | Jun 26, 2008

Thanks, Kaya, that's a great suggestion. I may be able to swing a portable cover-thingy as well - which will be good in case of rain (I hear that's rare here? Heh).

Christian: I would love to see you there, but you absolutely have to do the lunch. Who knows what kind of lead that could be?

And yep, Roberta, you hit the nail on the head! Let's set it up to keep it going.

Oh boy, so wish I could be there. Alas, still in Germany. Will spread the word, though. Sounds pretty darned perfect.

I hope it's fun enough that you won't be able to not do it again! My duck is all over outdoors events ...

Hi David, This sounds like a great event and I wish I could attend, but unfortunately have another appointment at that time.

I do hope it's a smashing success and I really hope that you'll consider doing it again before the summer is over (especially in Laurelhurst which is a beautiful park.)

  • Christian Messer
Posted by Christian Messer, Portland, Oregon | Jul 02, 2008

The event was crazy cool and fun! I found a new product to offer my clients, and the creative exercise we did put my thoughts into energy that I cannot ignore.

Thank you everyone, and especially David for creating an hosting, and I hope we do it again!

My only caveat is that somehow we form a circle so we can here everyone and therefore no one is left out (not that this happened, but the 2nd picnic table felt slightly away form the rest of us.)

  • Taylor Ellwood

  • Emma McCreary
Posted by Emma McCreary, Portland, Oregon | Jul 02, 2008

I had a great time too! Christian - good thought on the circle idea, but how do you do that with picnic tables?? Maybe if they were pushed together to make one long table it would feel more cohesive.

  • Kaya Singer
Posted by Kaya Singer, Portland, Oregon | Jul 03, 2008

David and others. This event was excellent. I enjoyed the park atmosphere and it was fun to do the drawing exercise. I agree about the problem with the two tables. If we do this again maybe some people could bring folding chairs and we could add those around one picnic table.

Anyway- it was still wonderful and very relaxing as well. Maybe again before summer is over. Who wants to take the plunge and be an event organizer?

  • David Billings
Posted by David Billings, Sandy, Oregon | Jul 03, 2008

I'm glad you all enjoyed it. Anytime you can work crayons into networking, I think it should be done.

I agree about the tables, but I feel bad because I built them from dead branches in the area, just before you arrived. The circle is a great idea, though.

Once again I got to meet with some interesting people and had the wheels in my brain turning again. Thanks to all of you for participating and being open to a pre-school activity!

Next time I need to remember cookies and Kool-Aid.

  • Mark Silver
Posted by Mark Silver, Portland, Oregon | Jul 03, 2008

I always wondered when it was going to be time to drink the Kool-Aid in Biznik...

  • Barbara Saunders
Posted by Barbara Saunders, Portland, Oregon | Jul 03, 2008

Oooo Kool-Aid would have been good yesterday. We'll have to work it into the next one. David, I think you started a cool PDX Biznik tradition. It was really great to get away from the computer and into nature (but not too much nature) and just enjoy each other. And if John Wayne can circle a bunch of wagons, I'm sure we can find a way to circle some silly old picnic tables - we ARE creative after all!

    Nice idea David.

I'll volunteer to steer the next one - I'm thinking August 6th - what do you guys think?

  • Mark Silver
Posted by Mark Silver, Portland, Oregon | Jul 03, 2008

Drat! I'll be out of town. Do you think it's too soon to aim for the week of July 21?

Or a week later for the week of August 11?

I know, I know- not everyone can have their preferences met. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

And, as long as I'm being picky and selfish, I'm going to be teaching on Wednesday, probably until noon- so if it started say, at noon instead of 11am, I could get there just a little late.

  • Barbara Saunders
Posted by Barbara Saunders, Portland, Oregon | Jul 03, 2008

I'm good for whenever. I'm volunteering Mark to bring the ice cream!

    :-)

  • Mark Silver
Posted by Mark Silver, Portland, Oregon | Jul 03, 2008

Aha! Perhaps I can bring something other than a dairy item. Believe me, none of us will be happy if there's dairy.

Oh, was that too much information?

  • Barbara Saunders
Posted by Barbara Saunders, Portland, Oregon | Jul 03, 2008

Popsicles come under the umbrella of ice cream (they're the 'ice' part).

    :-)

    (nice try, though)

Posted by Roberta MacLaren, Gresham, Oregon | Jul 03, 2008

Well t sounded like a wonderful lunchtime event. I am so, so sorry that I was unable to come. Especially since I was one of the peeps that wanted to make sure Christian was going to be there. I had my lawn chairs in the car and was heading out the door when life came in and decided otherwise!!

If there is any type of recap, or information that would be helpful for next time I would appreciate that information.

I don't want to miss the next one. Any of the dates that have been mentioned work for me. But picking a date is the most important thing, some people may not make it no matter how close they are to getting there!!!

Mark (and everyone) - what about the 20th of July or Aug. 13th?

  • Barbara Saunders
Posted by Barbara Saunders, Portland, Oregon | Jul 03, 2008

The 20th of July is a Sunday. I'm booked on Sundays. The 13th of August works.

  • Christian Messer
Posted by Christian Messer, Portland, Oregon | Jul 04, 2008

Damn - I meant the 23rd! Sorry - the sun is getting to my head. And thoughts of ice cream.

The 23rd looks good to me!

  • Christian Messer
Posted by Christian Messer, Portland, Oregon | Jul 04, 2008

Waiting for approval, but I have picked the 13th of August - any objections?

If people would like to buddy with me for (Did we get buddies?) accountability, e-mail me or send a message - and if you'd like we could do a mini-check-in over coffee before then?

  • David Billings
Posted by David Billings, Sandy, Oregon | Jul 04, 2008

Hey Christian, I'd love to buddy with you on this. Let's arrange it, just give me a call or shoot me an e-mail (I'll do the same and I'm sure we'll figure it out).

I don't think we officially decided on who to pair up with, but it would be great if everyone checked in with each other periodically.
