Event description

Modern man sits far too much. My aim is to inspire a new type of biznik event: The Walk and Talk. Let it spread like wild fire through every neighborhood and get us off our butts and outside for some active interaction!

Walk and Talks are all about getting up and moving our bodies, reconnecting with the outside world and with each other. A good way to get your day going and your blood flowing with fresh ideas and fresh air.

Please have your devices turned off. The focus is on face-to-face connection and being aware of our surroundings--not taking calls or twittering.

Meet at the Black Sun in Volunteer Park (the big donut-like sculpture across from the Asian Art Museum--pictured on the Capitol Hill Group page). We'll depart for our walk at 9:05, heading north so if you are late, run and catch up.

Don't dress to impress--comfortable shoes and warm clothes are what these Walk and Talks are all about.

Rain, sleet, snow or shine.

There have been a few questions so I am posting this at the end of the thread as well as here...

THIS event is on TUESDAY morning, March 31 at 9am.

I am hosting another Walk and Talk the following Monday, April 6 at the same time, same place.

Parking is free and usually abundant at this time. If you drive into the park from 15th Avenue (just south of the cemetery opening and almost across from Galer St.) you will turn left at the roundabout where the big human statue is in the center (see a greenhouse on your right). From there you go a short distance and you'll see the Asian Art Museum on your left and the Black Sun (big donut sculpture as pictured in the Capitol Hill Group photo) on your right. There is easy parking by the Black Sun sculpture.

Here is a map that you can print and bring with you to make sure you find us: http://www.planetware.com/map-of/seattle-volunteer-park-us-wa-vp.htm

See you TUESDAY at 9AM

Karrie

Karrie... I love it. It seems to fall in line with my good friend Jody in San Francisco who recently made his desk a podium so he could stand vs. sit while he works. "sitting is not sustainable" - right on!

Looking forward to seeing you and everyone else!

This is such a fabulous idea. If some of us hosted walks in other areas, on other days of the week and times of the day, Bizniks could find a mind clearing, friend making walk every day of the week. Karrie, since this is your idea, would you form a Walk and Talk Group, please. If you do that, I'll set up a regular Seward Park/Lake Washington Boulevard Walk and Talk. Maybe Nancy could be the Greenlake host. Alki, Discovery Park and lots of other great walking places are out there.

  • Suzanne Griscom

John, your wish come true: http://biznik.com/groups/walk-and-talk-events I hope everyone here will join that group so we can get moving all over town...

Posted by Karrie Kohlhaas, Seattle, Washington | Mar 26, 2009

Great Susan! The idea is aching to be copied as much as our bodies are aching to get out and walk and move and breathe fresh air.

Be sure to join the Main Walk and Talk Group: http://biznik.com/groups/walk-talk-events

Once you join that group, you can post events there for Walk and Talks anywhere!

Loving the energy swirling into this!

Kerrie, I will try to make this but I have to see what next week brings. We do have a Biznik lunch at Pizza Works at noon - if anyone RSVPs this week.

I've been on a Walk and Talk last September that Jenny Zappala hosted on the Eastside. http://biznik.com/events/eastside-walk-and-talk-0 It was a great way to network.

    Welcome Paul!

I just did a few introductions to some of you who really should meet and talk on this walk or at some point.

Be sure to check out each other's profiles before Tuesday so you know who you want to walk and talk with. If you want more walking and talking, just RSVP for the following week's Real Tweets, Real Feets Walk and Talk.

Anyone thinking of joining, feel free. This is a very friendly and fun crowd!

Thanks Karrie, looking forward to it...hey, there appears to be some confusion happening here, and I wanted to chime in.

Someone just mentioned that this event was on Monday morning and not Tuesday...but you obviously have Tuesday morning indicated from what I can see, right?

I guess I'm double-checking here with you in case there's some goof I'm not aware of.

Hey Kerrie, one more quick question...could you share a little about the parking scenario at this park, as it's a first-time visit for some of us.

I scanned the posts here and didn't see anything about parking.

    Thanks!

  • Karrie Kohlhaas
Posted by Karrie Kohlhaas, Seattle, Washington | Mar 30, 2009

Funny, Paul. I once made my facebook status that I was "directing traffic in a busy intersection." I was kidding around but a lot of people emailed wanting to know where I was so they could come watch.

I hope I helped you find us!

  • John Hays
Posted by John Hays, Seattle, Washington | Mar 30, 2009

There is usually plentiful street parking just outside the park, as well. Lots of local residents have gone off to work and left their street parking for us.

  • Fresh Creative Co.
Posted by Fresh Creative Co., Seattle, Washington | Mar 30, 2009

Sounds fun! I'll be there. I might have to borrow this idea and try it in West Seattle or Green Lake. I could use fresh air!

  • Ada-Reva Franklin
Posted by Ada-Reva Franklin, Seattle, Washington | Mar 30, 2009

Thanks Karrie, I am looking forward to it but have you considered afternoon or late evening walks for those of us who are morning impaired!

  • John Hays
Posted by John Hays, Seattle, Washington | Mar 30, 2009

I plan on scheduling some evening walks in Seward Park and at other SE Seattle locations.

Another solution for Ada-Reva and others with the same problem with morning walks is to schedule some of your own through the Walk and Talk Group. It's really easy to use the online form to get something on the schedule and promoted Biznik wide.

The way this group is developing, there should soon be lots of options at various times and locations to accommodate anyone's work and life schedules.

  • Karrie Kohlhaas
Posted by Karrie Kohlhaas, Seattle, Washington | Mar 30, 2009

Rachel A., definitely think about hosting some Walk and Talks in other parts of town. That's what we are aiming for. Sylvia Taylor has already posted a West Seattle W&T so check that out on the Walk and Talk pages.

Ada-Reva, yes, I would like to do some walks as breaks from work during the day and evening walks too. I hope you'll take John's suggestion and think about hosting some of your own as well.

Glad you will both be joining us.

And welcome to Dana Sprinkel! I will check out your profiles before the event.

Thanks John for chiming in with encouragement and other ideas.

This sounds like such a great idea, but I'm currently still shackled by my day job. I'd love to attend if we wind up having walk-and-talk events that are outside of normal business hours! Good luck and have fun. :)

  • Karrie Kohlhaas
Posted by Karrie Kohlhaas, Seattle, Washington | Mar 31, 2009

Holy moley, we have 26 walk and talkers now. This will be great!

Virginia, we'll do lots more of these. Be sure to join: http://biznik.com/groups/walk-talk-events to find out more.

Consider posting one of your own through the group page as well. It's the easiest biznik event to host: no venue to find and secure, no presentation to make. A great low pressure event to host.

  • John Hays

Do we have a parade permit from the police? LOL

  • Karrie Kohlhaas
Posted by Karrie Kohlhaas, Seattle, Washington | Mar 31, 2009

We don't NEED a parade permit, we have you.

  • Suzanne Griscom
Posted by Suzanne Griscom, Seattle, Washington | Mar 31, 2009

I don't think I will get there in time to start out with the group. Which way will you be walking? Clockwise or widdershins? I may just walk the other way and meet you all partway. I may even get to use the umbrella I've owned for about 15 years and never used!

Is anyone planning, or hoping, to grab a coffee after the walk? Give me a buzz at 206-331-1705 if you think you will and haven't bumped into me yet.

  • Karrie Kohlhaas
Posted by Karrie Kohlhaas, Seattle, Washington | Mar 31, 2009

I'll bring your number so someone can call you if we don't see you when we start. We'll head north toward the Conservatory (huge greenhouse), then it's up to the group which way we head.

I think we'll be in front of Black Sun for a few more minutes so everyone can get acquainted.

    See ya'll in the AM.

We missed those who missed it, but we'll catch you next time. Keep a lookout on the Walk and Talk Group page and think about hosting some yourself!
