Event description

How is your cash flow these days? Every decision you make impacts your personal and business cash flow... Are you setting aside time in your schedule to pay attention to it? Do you know where your money is going and what you can do to increase the flow?

Playing the game is a fun and risk-free way to:

  • Discover your financial habits and beliefs
  • Experiment with new financial choices
  • Observe the results of your beliefs and choices

  • Practice “investing“ in stocks, real estate and businesses

  • Become more familiar with the concept of Cash Flow

  • Understand your Balance Sheet and Income Statement

We'll start with introductions, play for 90 minutes and end with a useful brainstorm/discussion on how to increase cash flow in real life (with time allowed for networking at the end). Please come even if you've never played it before. You will experience a LOT in a short amount of time!

Here's what Sarah Max, CNN/Money Senior Writer had to say about the game:

“On a recent evening I bought into a limited partnership, flipped a bed and breakfast for a quick profit, tripled my money on “OK4U“ pharmaceutical stock. I also got downsized from my teaching job, bought a duplex and had a baby. After all that, I managed to get out of the proverbial rat race.“

Steve and Katherine, thanks for your comments. I love hosting games for people that haven't played the game before. Here's a summary of the general rules of the game:

Goal: To escape the Rat Race (living paycheck to paycheck) and be able to buy your dream in the Fast Track (have enough cash on hand to buy it).

Setup: The game board has two playing spaces - the Rat Race circle in the middle and the Fast Track on the outside. Everyone gets an Occupation Card, a Rat, a Cheese and Tokens. Everyone starts out in the Rat Race with one Paycheck and Savings amount, which is recorded on a game sheet and check register.

Escaping the Rat Race: You escape the Rat Race by investing in opportunities (rental properties, stocks businesses) that produce passive income. When your passive income is greater than your monthly expenses, you no longer have to work for money and you move to the Fast Track.

Buying your Dream: At the start of the game, everyone puts selects a Dream. You get cash in the Fast Track by once again investing in real estate and business opportunities. You win the game by landing on your Dream and having the cash to buy it. (There's actually another way to win the game, which I'll share at the game).

Other Rules/Situations: 1. You can borrow from the bank in multiples of $1000 at 10% interest. 2. You can sell opportunities to other players. 3. You can pay off personal debt at any time as long as you pay it off completely. 4. You can gift money to other players but not loan them money. 5. It's possible to be downsized, have a baby and donate to charity.

Thanks, Ruth! Fascinating, challenging, fun, illuminating game! And you are such an incredibly patient and optimistic teacher! Thank you. I learned a lot - about stuff i often try to avoid - generally to my detriment - money, investing, risk, decision making . . . Thanks for making this opportunity available and, again, for your cheerful patience. Cheers!
