Event description

Have you forgotten what good news is? Are you wondering what frozen custard is? Shut off the network news and come taste Wisconsin’s favorite treat, which puts ice cream to shame and has FINALLY made its way to Seattle! Indulge in this amazing frozen treat, or coffee or a coffee and frozen custard combo and share any good news you have about your business. No kvetching, just light-hearted networking, informal sharing about what’s working in your business and an end of the day snack – all so much better than watching the depressing nightly news!

This event will be held at Peaks, Seattle’s first frozen custard shop. Peaks opened just a few months ago and is owned by two indie entrepreneurs and former Wisconsinites who serve up a variety of tasty goodies including baked goods, great coffee, an environmentally-friendly business and lots of good karma. Treats and coffee start at about $3.00...the typical coffee and snack rates. Peaks also serves quiche and salads, so if you don't have time for dinner before the event you can grab a light dinner along with your coffee and/or snack. Frozen custard flavors that day will be chocolate, almond roca and vanilla!

If you can’t join us for this event, check out Peaks on your own. This charming shop has free Wi-fi, lots of room to hunker down and work, local art, a comfy sofas, leather chairs, a fireplace and a kid-friendly area with books and toys. Peaks is a great addition to the neighborhood and the indie entrepreneurial community.

And a Chicago homeboy joins the ranks! Good to see your RSVP, Michael. You likely know what we're talking about. Rumor has it that frozen custard is an eastcoast thang, too! The poor, uninitiated Northwesterners. If they join us, they will no doubt be converts, too!

ok, count this uninitiated Northwesterner in!

Hi Nancy, I wish I can join but this is the day I move to a new brokerage and there are a cuple things that I need to do, so I can't make it. Hope I can make to the next one!

    Hi Yuno,

Looks like a good turnout already, so yes I will likely run this again and hope you can join us then. Good luck with your move!

Frozen custard: what a delicious ploy to get folks to your event :-) This Seattle native was introduced to frozen custard last summer in St. Louis and I've been craving more ever since.

Ah Leila, then why aren't you joining us? I bet there is good news to share from the writing and spring industry!

I am an Oregon boy, been a number of places, though never to Wisconsin--but I do love the Packers!

  • Nancy Hanauer
Posted by Nancy Hanauer, Seattle, Washington | Mar 24, 2009

Hi Norman. Looking forward to meeting you at the event. I would say the Packers and frozen custard are two of the best things created in WI...and yours truly, of course! ;0) See you soon.

  • Norman Husser
Posted by Norman Husser, Seattle, Washington | Mar 24, 2009

So watching the Packers while eating frozen custard with you would be the ultimate WI experience. We should market that!

  • Nancy Hanauer
Posted by Nancy Hanauer, Seattle, Washington | Mar 24, 2009

Norman, Can't say that it's been marketed, but I'm sure it's been done! No matter how cold it gets in WI, we eat frozen custard year round. Most of the custard shops back home even have holiday-inspired flavors like eggnog, etc. We also add vanilla frozen custard to our holiday blended drinks and desserts. Eating frozen custard is an artform back home!

P.S. If people can't wait until the event to try it, there's a two for one coupon in last week's Strarnger, which should be out for a few more days...and you can always check the Peaks website for the flavor of the day that changes daily and is offered along side chocolate and vanilla.

    Hi Nancy,

This event looks like fun - and with good treats too, yum! I'd love to attend but usually have clients Wed evenings...: - (

If I happen to have this evening open I will see if you have spots open. And if I don't make it I'm gonna drop by Peaks sometime on my own. I love custard, and have never tried it frozen; sounds dreamy...

Posted by Nancy Hanauer, Seattle, Washington | Mar 25, 2009

    Hi Johnna,

Please do drop in. Even if we are 30, I suspect there will be a few no-shows (crazy!) and even is we don't, I'm sure 31 won't be a prblem. I will likely run this again and shoot for a different night.

Just as a heads up, the name is a bit of a misnomer...frozen custard is like ice cream but softer, denser and richer than ice cream (and not chalky like soft serve!).

Oh, wow, This is great. I didn't know they had one in Seattle. I grew up in St Louis and they are all over the place there. I am so in!

Welcome, Geoff. Peaks is Seattle's first frozen custard shop and run by Wisconsonites, so you'll feel right at home with the good Midwestern vibe!

I've managed not to buy ice cream for weeks now, finally starting to lose my "winter fat," and now this!?

I don't know if I can trust myself with something "better than ice cream" - this sounds DANGEROUS! (Fortunately, Seattle is completely inconvenient, don't even tell me if there's one the the far east side!)

  • Nancy Hanauer
Posted by Nancy Hanauer, Seattle, Washington | Apr 02, 2009

Kate, nope no Peaks (or any frozen custard) on the eastside, so you're "safe", but it's so worth it. I'm allergic to dairy and even I can't give up my custard fix!

Hey Nancy! My friend scored tickets to Swan Lake, so I'm going for ballet over custard - it was a tough choice, but it looks like you frequent this place enough so I'll get a chance next time.

I'm up that way often visiting friends (my WI friend that you remind me of), so I'll have to treat her to a little bit of home ...

  • Nancy Hanauer
Posted by Nancy Hanauer, Seattle, Washington | Apr 03, 2009

Hey Leslie, No worries...I'd cancel too if someone offered to take me to the ballet! Have a great time and I'll see ya on 4/27 or sooner. Still want to talk with you about that cell phone application.

Yeah, haven't forgotten that ... I have a list of apps I'm looking into and plan on asking my tech buddies for their thoughts. Figured it be easier to chat with you directly when I've got something more concrete ... interesting how many of us are late night chatters :-D

Stunningly, I have to cancel as well. Who woulda thunk it! :-( Writing clients don't wait for custard. And I guess I'm not enough of a persuasive writer to be able to convince them to meet with me and discuss deadlines over frozen custard! Next time, I hope. Ja, hey! Dave Kuhns www.cyranowriter.com

    Hi all,

I just noticed that this event says $5.00 collected at the door. I have no idea why it says that, there is no fee for this event and I did not enter that info into the event listing. I will check with Dan and Lara about this. Thanks and see you soon! Nancy

You did such a fabulous job. The culture of the event was so cordial and welcoming, and I attribute that to you. We'll come to the next one. Terry

Aw, shucks...thanks Terry! ;0) BTW, two of the gentleman took my advice and took quarts and pints home to their wives...bet they were happy. (Nancy's little marital tips for free...or following John's lead I should have charged a nickel for that advice!)

What a fun event and a great group of people! I'm so pleased we had such a great turnout and now have so many custard converts. I look forward to seeing you all next month and having the group grow even bigger. Thanks for attending, all!
