Event description

What are the costs and benefits to breaking away from traditional "big house" publishers and forming one's own company? What are the key elements required to make such a business flourish? How do you manage the nuts and bolts of designing, producing, warehousing, marketing, selling and shipping books? What are some of the risks? How much money can a writer make this way? What kinds of partners are desirable? Jamie McKenzie will share his success story along with cautionary tales. This session and happy hour are designed for writers, photographers, printers, copy editors, design folks, web developers, online store providers and any indie types involved in bringing books to market.

Wish I could come chat on this one. A primary reason I went into blogging as a career was to move away from traditional publishers and leverage different publishing models.

I can only encourage anyone interested in being an author to take a serious look at self publishing and independent publishers to target a specific need. I've been lucky enough to know several successful independent authors... and I really think it is a better road for most.

For anyone looking for the inside scoop on self-publishing, Jamie is your man. He met with me a few months ago and gave me a lot of great insight into the world of self-publishing. Looking forward to meeting with others interested in the topic and seeing you again, Jamie!

I would love to come to this event as I have a book in progress that I want to self publish. Much to my dismay, I am totally booked on the 28th. Please, please host this again.

I love how serendipity works...I was just showing a client the biznik site...clicked on Events, and voila'!

I am writing my first fiction piece, and have had other books published by professional publishers.

Did not like that route...no marketing help, and lousy editing job, etc. So I'd like to try something new for this new creation...self publishing may be it!

I'll be there with eyes wide open...

Thanks, Jamie, for sharing your very helpful ideas and knowledge from your self-publishing experience. It was a really inspiring presentation, and I enjoyed meeting some other inquisitive would-be self-publishing authors, like myself.

If I had anything to add, it would the recommendation that every self-pub author invest in the Chicago Manual of Style and read the first few chapters to get acquainted with traditional publishing processes. Even though, to save money, most self-pub authors might elect to multi-task on some of the jobs involved in publishing a book, it's important to understand why publishers have the distinct positions of developing editor, copy editor, designer/DTP professional, and proofreader; and why each job has its own set of specific tasks at a particular stage of the production process.

I would be interested in attending another seminar on Web self-publishing, as a means in itself and a way of building an audience for a future print work.

Thanks for getting the wheels turning in the ol' noggin and kudos to your success!

    Thanks Jamie,

Your presentation gave me some ideas that I could use. And I second Nelda's idea, I too "would be interested in attending another seminar on Web self-publishing, as a means in itself and a way of building an audience for a future print work."
