I just recently took the Twitter plunge and still don't really know what I'm doing with it, so this will be a great event for me. Thanks for hosting it!
Learn how Facebook and Twitter enhance Biznik!
Hosted by Rev. Meredith Ann Murray & Naomi Pollack in Bellingham, Washington
Type: Educational Workshop
When: Thursday, March 12 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Event description
From Meredith Ann Murray:
People want to do business with people they know, like and trust. Learn how Facebook, a powerhouse in the new Social Media with 175 million users worldwide, can help you build those relationships and learn more about others. By knowing people more intimately, you can better serve their needs. In this class you'll learn about your Privacy Settings; how to 'Tag' people; build your network of Friends; post photos, links, notes, videos; comment on your friend's postings and search for people you may have lost touch with over the years.
From Naomi Pollack:
'Twitter is a growing social network surrounding a microsharing application.'
But what does that mean? Isn't Twitter just a waste of time? Why would anyone want to know what I'm eating for lunch, or what movie I just saw? How can I possibly use Twitter in my business?
If you have these or similar questions, and you're wondering why everyone seems to be joining Twitter and what they're all 'tweeting' about, come to this event!
I'll explain what Twitter is, in my experience, and how I've found it to be helpful in my business. I'll share with you some tips and tools I've discovered since joining the 'twitterverse' several months ago. We'll put Twitter in perspective in the family of social media websites and applications, and explore Twitter's role in your business' social media presence.
THIS VENUE IS FULLY ACCESSIBLE.

Everyone's aTwitter on the internet about Facebook and Twitter. This week alone, I heard Calls from 2 different leaders on suggesting use on both of these sites to market our businesses in a more effective way. So glad that you are speaking on this very timely subject. Can't wait to learn more from you 2 awesome women.

Resistance is futile. Twitter thou shalt. Tweet, tweet surrender. Looking forward to it. Biggest decision: twitter handle.

After the event: One of the first things I saw after getting on the net after the event was this great article on twittering and blogging: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/12/business/smallbusiness/12social.ready.html?em
Thanks Meredith and Naomi. It was very instructive and useful. and I expect to be using what I learned.

Meredith and Naomi -- I agree with Daimon that it was instructive and good to see you working live with each site as you talked about them.
For those who may feel a bit overwhelmed, remember that Rome wasn't built in a day, and all tools are not for everyone. More sessions like this are sure to follow.
Great space for a workshop, Meredith! Thanks to you and the Keller Williams folks

Fantastic article, Daimon, thanks for finding it and linking to it!
Social media, including Twitter, is growing by leaps and bounds and doesn't look like it will slow down anytime soon. I follow Gary Vaynerchuck (@garyvee) who was interviewed in that article and he is indeed a phenomenal business person who is effectively using social media.
If you're curious about how to use Twitter for business, my recommendation would be to go to http://www.twittergrader.com, click on "twitter elite", and follow the top 20 or 30 people (you can also find the "top" twitter users in your city/area). Observe them for a week or two. They'll post lots of interesting articles and tips, and they'll demonstrate all the ways twitter can be used to communicate - replying, re-tweeting, hashtags, etc.
Thanks to each of you for coming to this event and bearing with us as we scratched at the tip of the social media iceberg that is Facebook and Twitter. I learned a lot from all of your questions and comments! Keep an eye out for a Twitter 101 article soon...

Thanks for putting on that class, Naomi and Meredith. I learned a ton! I'm going to get on my Facebook account and add some applications and see what I can do with it. As for Twitter, I think I'll watch that a bit more first. (I already spend hours a day on a computer for work and e-mail communications.) I'll check out Daimon's and Naomi's article links, too.
I sure like the tone at biznik events. Such great people belong to biznik!!!

That was a great event, you two! It was very helpful, and user-friendly, and I believe it deserves an "advanced" class, when we've all dinked around our sites a bit more, and want to take it to the next level.
Great meeting space, by the way.

Thank you Meredith and Naomi for hosting such a wonderful and educational event on Facebook and Twitter. I enjoyed it a lot!
I look forward to seeing everyone again at events in the future.
After the event a hand full of people went to Anthony's for drinks and that made for a very nice after-event social. During the social I shared a tech tip for people looking to upgrade their computer to the latest version of Windows:
To get the best value, compatibility, and make your experience smoother, consider waiting until the first service pack is released for Windows before upgrading or making the switch. Many professionals in the IT world follow this rule religiously, and it's been known to save companies thousands of dollars by making your system run more smoothly, glitch free, and compatible with the hardware and software you use.

Thank you both for giving so much useful information. I have a lot to learn still but you have given me a good running start.
I had to leave about 30 minutes early, do you have notes that could be sent from the Twitter part of the workshop?

I was pleased that we also had 6 folks from my office or sphere there as well - maybe they'll join Biznik! I appreciate your comments everyone. You can message me directly if you have any construtive feedback on how we can make the class better the next time - what didn't work and what worked well. Thank you.
Blessings, Meredith

As a newcomer to Biznik, is there a discussion board of some sort with topics, like social media? I don't see it. There's a group for social networking, I know, but presently it has no activity. It seems this is a rapidly evolving area where ongoing discussion would be useful. If it exists, I'd appreciate a nudge in the right direction.
For instance, here's another excellent article I found, but I don't know where else to post it. I suppose I could write an article based on it. Anyway, here it is, with great insights:
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2009/03/on-twitter-mind.html
I like the part where publisher Tim O'Reilly says twitter allows him to tune into a focused part of the discussion (my interpretation of his words).

Thanks for posting this article, Daimon. Interesting! I still don't have much attraction to Twitter myself - Facebook's my game. The founder of FB was on Oprah yesterday!! If FB were a country, it would be the 6th largest one! 175 MILLION users. This young man is 24 now and a BILLIONAIRE!! He and his friends started it at Harvard as a way to keep in touch with all of their friends in their different locations, on and off campus. Amazing!! It is such a POWERFUL social media. The largest demographic joining now is over 30 years old. He was so tickled to be on Oprah! His parents were in the front row. Ha!

Thanks for another great article Daimon!
I think the key with social media, with so many sites and services out there, is to find what clicks for you. If FB works for you, embrace it! If Twitter seems fun, dive in! Don't feel obligated to do something just because "everyone" else is.
Meredith, that is so neat that Mark Zuckerburg (@finkd, if you want to follow him on Twitter too) was on Oprah, too bad I missed it! FB is amazing. I honestly think if I had to pick FB or Twitter I might have to go with FB for its pure connective value. Twitter is fun but I could probably live without it. FB is really valuable, with so many ways to share, connect, and create community.
So there you have it - 'm a total Twitter nut who admits that FB is perhaps, for now, the superior service... BUT, watch out, Twitter is growing really fast too. :)
