Event description

Let's put the Go-Giver philosophy to work and put our money where our mouth is!

This powerful event is inspired by Extreme Sports Photographer, Karen (pronounced car-en) Johanson, who is a master (mistress?) at playing The Contribution Game, which is an awesome, fun way for us to focus on how we can provide value to another and begin to make meaningful connections.

Portland Bizniks are super Go-Givers, so let's show are true colors in a BIG WAY in support of our visitors from up North joining us on this Biznik Train Tour!

Magic happens when playing the Contribution Game:  What you want or need in your business (e.g., your intentions for business success) gets moved forward by holding them (your wants and needs) in the background.  You've probably heard it said that 'you get what you want by helping others get what they want.'

But The Contribution Game takes it a step further.  It's called "The Law of OVERCompensation," where you come to realize that your personal and business success is in proportion to what you do after you've done what is expected.  It's about going the extra mile every time.

So, here's what to expect from the Contribution Game (so you can prepare beforehand):

(You can learn more about how to play The Contribution Game from business guru Matthew Ferry by clicking here.)

  • Introduce yourself to two people you don't know
  • Find out who people are — really — not just their title
  • Find out what they're committed to — in business and beyond
  • Leave your agenda behind
  • See how you can make a difference
These are your questions for the evening:
  • How can I help?
  • How can I support?
  • Who do I know? Do I have contacts or resources? Is there someone else I've talked to in the room that can support this person?
Show up with a giving mindset and something to write with/on — unless you have a photographic memory!  (We'll provide extra paper and pens, in case you forget.)  Be prepared to have fun and to blow your mind (and your business)!

Be sure to spread the word.  The more the merrier!

This event was a little chaotic, but I love the idea of the Contribution game. I wanted more time and then more time for larger group feedback but I do hope someone in seattle (Me!) does another event focusing on the theme.

As part of our two-day venture, this was an added bonus. As Becca said, would have liked a little more time as a group to interact, but at the same time I was able to spend some quality conversation getting to know Cindi and what she has to offer.

    Tshombe,

The whole idea behind this event is an excellent one. Next time I would add more time ( and a quieter environment) to process, particularly for the "noise-challenged" among us. It was a Saturday night and so the restaurant was busy and that might have been part of it.

What I really loved about it was the opportunity to know get to know April in a way that goes beyond superficial, so I got to know the whole person. It is amazing when you really focus on one person how you can have the timer and space to figure out the ways you might help her grow her business or address one of her challenges.

Perhaps next time, a session w/out the task of doing the dinner thing might work better. Or do the contribution game first and have dinner later. Just thinking out loud.

Thanks, Tshombe, for all the great organizing you did. This trip was a wonderful Biznik adventure.

    Tsombe,

I too got alot out of the person-to-person nature of the event. yes, the venue could be improved from a noise standpoint, but the food was stunning, and the company awesome!

Here is what I realized from your way of doing the contribution game...it allowed me a psychological way to get my needs met by writing what I wanted down. That allowed me then to quiet the chatter in my brain and put the 'neediness' on the shelf so to speak...for I knew that at another point i would be able to be fully focussed on.

It is like acknowledging that everyone is important, and assuring us all that we would have our needs attended to...and that opens up the listening and contribution process in an all new way..

Mostly, this allowed me to be able to fully focus on the other person 110% for the time we had to do it. This was incredible, for my ability to concentrate went up a bunch -which increased my resourcefulness and my ability to contribute to the other person.

I not only felt good for the value I received, but I felt like the other person was in a position to fully receive what I had to give, for they knew that my needs were checked at the door so to speak.

It was terrific as a process. I recommend you do it again for your people in Portland...and I will be adding the technique to my skill sets.

    thank you for sharing it.

    then, wh

I set my brain on cruise control and completely surrendered to the 10 hour round trip excursion to Portland. Joined the Bellingham Bizniks in Everett and with each stop more Biznik members added to the adventure. We arrived in Portland mentally tired but looking forward to the dinner and meeting more Portland Bizniks. None of the 20 committed (?) Portland members showed, but honestly our Portland host has the power of 20 on his own! What an absolutely delightful man. The trip was worth experiencing his joy, laughter and electric personality. Our Bellingham host did a marvelous job of establishing simple loosely organized guidelines and then said "do what you want, when you want with whom you want". The business trip became a relaxing mini-vacation sprinkled with insight and shared passion. After a challenging discussion on collaboration over coffee most of us spent Sunday at the Portland Market with our new friends laughing, eating and enjoying one another. Thanks to Lori Richardson and Tshombe Brown for the extra work and time putting this experience together.

My recollection of the entire 'longerst biznik ever' event was a whirlwind of exposure to new people and ideas. Dinner and walking around Portland was an experience in itself. The challenge of the Contribution Game was about exploring my own preconceptions about giving to others. Which I think I do consciously --but seeing my own unconscious agenda was very powerful. Most importantly I met some wonderful people who inspired me to stay on target with my goals and stay in touch. How cool is that!?
