Event description
In this WordPress workshop, we focus on themes, widgets and plugins. With literally thousands of them out there, how do you choose and what should you look for?
Papa Bear: Themes are the backbone of your WordPress site. We'll look at free vs. premium themes and the differences—pros and cons. We'll explore a few themes and go through the available options. Finally, we look at how to choose a theme to best fit your needs and whether you want it customized or use "out of the box".
Mama Bear: Plugins can give your site or blog that extra push. Most of them run in the background and add functionality and speed to your site. We'll look at the must-haves and the caution you need to take when using them.
Baby Bear: Widgets can be practical, fun, or both. A widget can allow visitors to sign up for you enewsletter—or list the top ten songs at iTunes. We'll explore how widgets work and you'll get a few tips and tricks.
You'll walk away with a better understanding of the power of these WordPress elements so you make better decisions and have more control over your site.
Note that this is a free workshop, but the Mosaic survives on donations, so please consider dropping an extra buck or two in the donation box. Thanks!
Attendees can expect to...
walk away with a better understanding of themes, widgets and plugins and how they can make or break their WordPress website or blog
Top reasons you should attend...
- Bob's keynote presentation (no, not Powerpoint)
- Your choice of a WordPress theme is one of your most important decisions you'll make
- Bob tells it like it is with WordPress
And the biggest reason is we will be giving away a single-license copy of the newest, most awesome version of the Headway theme, courtesy of the Headway folks!
The speaker will share...
so many great tips and information with that your brain may come close to exploding!

Nov 25, 2010 Bob- I've been living back home in Boston for almost 2 years. I also have a disabling condition and am not looking for work.
I've been off Biznik and other social media to save my energy, but I haven't found an unsubscribe button on any of your missives.
Please take me off your mailing list. I wish you the best.

Nov 25, 2010 Hi Chris, I understand. You must be talking about the messages I send out through our group WordPress Chatter. You probably aren't aware, but you can go into that group at any time and unsubscribe. But I will go ahead and remove you from the group to make it easy on you.
Hope things go well for you and have a great Holiday. ~bob

Dec 06, 2010 Feeling like a Phil Collins song. ("Missed Again") The email advertising this workshop arrived in my inbox at 3:00 AM today and it's already full. That's twice.
Yes, it would be nice to have it on the eastside too.

Dec 06, 2010 Hi Amy, that's pretty funny. I can just see a tent in the Mosaic parking lot. At least you wouldn't have to brew your own coffee!
Hey Kristi, will let you know, looking into that!
Sorry David, bam, it seemed to happen overnight!

Dec 09, 2010 Well, since your last free work shop I have started four more blogs. I put up one for a buddy of mine last summer about house painting and he got two jobs from it within a month. He has now doubled his work force, and it's winter.
For less than $150 he has three years of blog service at godaddy. I just wanted to say I feel lucky to have gotten a seat, and will be early. Thank you so much for what you are doing. -

Dec 09, 2010 I bought the domain names for Jeff Amsberry, Amsberry Painting, and Jeff Amsberry Painting to go along with my domain name at www.SeattleHousepainting.com
Jeff started as a sub domain of www.SeattleRealEstateFixer.com better known as FixerFixer, at www.AmsberryPainting.com I wrote a couple of posts about house painting mentioning Jeff Amsberry Painting. The first two contacts came through the Fixer fixer sites plugin for "Contact Me."
At some point I put up a one page web site for Amsberry Painting and wrote posts on my blog sites directing people to Amsberry Painting, and a link to the one page site on my blog roll.
He got results so he bought a domain name web package from Service Magic that they charged him for, and also charged for the referral, even though it's his site. They also bought the domain name for him, at a premium, of www.AmsberrysPainting.com
I hadn't paid any attention to what he was doing. If he got an inquiry through my plug in I would forward it on to him. When it was clear that Service Magic was charging him per lead, I think, I don't really know how it works, he contacted me to ask what I was doing.
So what I am encouraging him to do is to get his own account, set up his own site, I'm transferring his domain names to him, no charge, I just bought them as an experiment, so he can control his own marketing.
I referred him to Bob for when he gets to that point.
My site at www.SeattleHousePainting.com will have a link to Jeff.
As another aside, I put up a blog at www.aspringcleaning.com and and at one time both were on the first page of a Google search for house cleaning with our stagnant site at
For about a week we got an inquiry a day for service.
Let me also say that my Real Estate site at www.davidLosh.com was a hosted site through a national company with all the SEO in the world and I was stuck back on page 18 or 20 for years. If you paid them they could "move you up."
I converted, after a lot of agony, to Wordpress and now hit first page from time to time, but have steadily moved up, organically, with absolutely very little content other than maybe weekly posts.

Dec 09, 2010 Thanks for sharing David. This is what we cover in one on our "other" workshops about driving traffic to blog. Sounds like it has really worked for them. Great to hear. And they are a great marketing tool for your business, but it takes time and work.
Most importantly, as I tell everyone, "If you are not passionate about blogging, don't blog"
See you all Monday!

Dec 13, 2010 Bob,
I send my sincerest apology for not making it to your workshop. I tried, I really, really tried. It's a long ridiculous, frustrating story and I won't bore you with all the details. Finally gave up and came home.
I'm totally bummed to have missed it. I was looking forward to meeting you and gleaning knowledge to help me create a Wordpress website.

Dec 13, 2010 This was a great event. Thank you for keeping it all on topic, and to the point.
I will say that it would pay to get, and we will sign up for, help with WordPress now that I know how reasonable your program is.
Today you provided enough information to make me realize we have only scrathched the surface of what is possible.

Dec 13, 2010 Hi Bob... Thanks for a great event today. I got a ton of take-a-ways. I'm thinking "Headway" is the one for me. I love the drag & drop 'leaves'... A little more homework to do. And thanks for the list of widgets/plugins you prefer.

Dec 13, 2010 Bob - This was absolutely a great class for me as I learn what to do next and how to make the best of the resources out there. I'll keep on the lookout for more of your classes and take another look at my blog/website goals for 2011. You may be hearing from me! Ann

Dec 14, 2010 Another great class, Bob. If I come to enough of these, I know I'm eventually going to start blogging in spite of myself! Thanks for your extreme generosity (traveling about 2-4 hours each way to give a free class?!), and for making WordPress so much more accessible. Just having you confirm that Headway themes are often a good way to go, sets my mind so much more at ease.

Dec 14, 2010 I always take away at least one little 'gem' that I would otherwise have not known about. Thanks for the great information. Love your banter. And your 'tell-it-like-it-is' commentaries.
