Subscribe to Indie Biz Q&A Blogging Fears

I love to share with my massage clients about the benefits of massage, ways to support their posture and reduce pain in their daily lives. Many times I read about the benefits of blogging for your business. So my conclusion is that I should share my wisdom in a blog. My fear is centered around my lack of formal writing experience. What if I post a blog and the grammar is awful or (insert other writing phobias).

Any bloggers out there have stories about how they worked through their fears to blog?

I agree with Dawn; and I've seen your blog (and left a comment). It's fine.

One thing that's both good and bad about blogging is that sooner or later if someone reads your blog they find out who you are and what you are about - spelling, grammar and all. That will result in rapport with some and not with others. It will serve to attract just the kind of people who can relate to you.

I have been blogging for nearly 4 years since Dan McComb said "blog." It serves many functions and is now easy and fun without being stressful.

Kudo's PJ. The biggest hurdle is just making it happen and then refine what you have started once you are going.

As a result I have been thinking about a blog myself and who maybe this post is the catalyst to push me to just go out and do it, especially now that I have discovered the merits of Biznik community.

Thanks PJ, I'm glad you liked the blog and I hope you will stop by now and then to see what's been added.

I do recommend WordPress; it's simple and easy.

I agree with the others that writing in your own voice from the heart is important.

There are two ways to make your posts easier to write yet be more professional.

One is to write list articles:

    5 Ways to ____

    7 Reasons Massage Can ___

Or, you can write How To articles. You can write these as a sequence.

    1. Light the candles.

    2. Take take a warm bath, etc.

Also, contact the writers/editors for small local newspapers, even the ones at the local high school, to edit for you.

Most of these people need more money and will work cheap on a freelance basis.

Another way to be a better writer, in the creative sense, is to write when you are relaxed. Creativity is associated with slower brain wave frequencies, alpha and theta. (I'm a former clinical hypnotist)

Maybe you can get someone to give you a good massage before you start writing.

But again, coming from the heart is most important, especially on a personal topic like massage.

Brad – I highly recommend seeking support and reading articles of the Biznik community. The generosity and wisdom of this community has been invaluable to me.

Dennis – Yes, I use WordPress. I agree it is pretty easy. I am still a little image challenged though. I have a hard time getting them to line up where I want them next to text.

Danek – Those are great suggestions. I am writing my blog today. I have my chamomile relaxation tea all ready and I am getting a massage later. It’s a good life.

    PJ-

I had so many fears about blogging and putting myself out there. I was afraid I would not have enough content, typos, etc. My advice is to lean into it and give it a try - don't let the fear hold you back. It will get easier with time and you are a better writer than you give yourself credit for.

One thought would be to dig deep into your life experiences and relay that back to your work and your blog. I am sure many people will be able to relate making it very interesting to them.

    Good luck! Christa

PJ - It took my many many months just to get clear on how to get images onto my blog in sizes that were appropriate - and I am still image challenged on getting much else to happen, but I haven't tried to figure it out yet. Michael Max (who has a great blog, and uses Mac and iPhoto like I do) offered to help me but I never made it down to his place to learn... he's now flown the coop and resides in Asia, my lose.

Thanks for the encouragement Dennis, Christa and the Biznik community at large. I still have fears about my grammar, especially where to put commas. It was suggested that I use Word to check for spelling and grammar. Word has been great for the spelling and catches some of my grammar issues. It does not do much for my comma challenge. To help educate and refresh myself with sentence structure I started using Purdue’s OWL-online writing lab.

I am forging ahead and I agree with everyone when they say just get started and soon it becomes easier. Today I posted blog number ten of my Wednesday Massage Blog. Writing about health and massage has been a wonderful growing experience for me.

OWL is one of the first online resources I check.

Richard Nordquist also has many articles on grammar and punctuation. Top Four Comma Guidelines

I checked out your blog -- it looks very professional!

    Hi PJ,

I was afraid of blogging and unsure about how I would make time for it in the context of everything else I had on my plate. I pushed through the fear and have enjoyed solid business growth and revenue generation as a result of launching my blog at last on 9-1-07.

Practical Social Media Expert Steve MacDonald asked me to share my most powerful lessons learned since launching my blog at his most recent Village Bellevue event on social networking.

I share lots of nitty-gritty lessons learned, including metrics and dollar details.

You can listen to this FREE audio file that is posted to my blog at www.mainstreetmediasavvy.com. I made the post on April 16, 2009.

Enjoy and move forward when the timing and opportunity are perfect for you.

    Nancy
