Subscribe to Indie Biz Q&A Blogging support group

Hey gang,

I had an idea and want to see if there's any interest in it. After my last business blogging class and conversation with Dominic, I thought it might be cool to start up a Blogging support group.

This would be a laid-back, community chat/happy hour kind of gig. I thought about hosting it on a once-every-other-week basis. We would all bring our ideas, and maybe even draft posts, and use each other to brainstorm, bitch, and get better. I'd be there to offer opinions and help out when people get really stuck, as well as to get info on what biz bloggers want to know more about.

Would anyone want to come to something like that?

    Rachel,

Put me down as a definite maybe! :-)

I don't often get stuck while writing, but I am always interested in what people are writing about.

    Hi Rachel,

Sounds great, if the timing works out. I'm all for support groups.

Another worthwhile consideration here is should we have it during the day or in the evening. I could do either.

Rachel, awhile ago I posted on Biz Talk looking to see if anyone was interested in forming a WordPress pod ... sort of a support group for the more tech side of things, but got no takers. Are you thinking mainly just the writing end of blogger support, or??

My website/blog should be up fairly soon. I'm working on content now and have yet to write my first blog. I am very interested in a group that is focused on writing. My work schedule is very irregular. If the time and location work for me, I'll be there.

I'd be interested in participating in chats on either blogging or the technical aspect of it. It would definitely be worth a shot.

Leila, I'm so not the person to host a group talking about the technical side of blogging. I'm thinking more about the writing side of things. That said, I'd be open to people talking about whatever comes up in the moment, so technical issues will likely be a topic at some point. Overall, though, my vision is around support for the writing of blogs.

I like the idea. I would be willing to participate if the timing is right. The evening hours work best for me.

Evenings tend to be better for me than days, although Thursdays at noon or 1:00 would generally fit in with my schedule. As for which evenings, it varies from week to week.

Depending on place and time I might be interested in coming.....

Sounds like a great idea Rachel and a way to encourage more of us to swing by each others blogs and leave comments. Also, given any particular subject, someone in attendence would likely be able to offer guidance for others. Count me in... if the timing is right.

    Hi Rachel,

I'd be interested in attending via conference line/speaker phone if that's a possibility. I'm not planning on traveling to Seattle until later this Spring, but would like to attend if that's an option.

    Thanks,

    Ed

Wow, I didn't expect so much interest from parts so far afield. I was planning on hosting this at a coffee shop or a bar or cafe, so I'm not sure how to factor in a conference call with folks from other states.

Dan or Lara, if you're reading this, do you have any thoughts/solutions for how to incorporate the non-Seattle-area folks?

Maybe something the support group could do is have an online forum in addition somewhere.

Also, I have another question based on the feedback so far: do you want a free-form group that meets to talk about whatever comes up (on the topic of biz blogging), or do you want something with a little more structure, like planned exercises or specific topics?

How about a mix with the plan for each meeting posted before the meeting? This would mean off and on participation, but that would happen anyway due to peoples' varying schedules. The balance of structured vs. unstructured meetings could evolve over time out of participants needs.

I am going to blame this on me working online for a living but when you said "chat" i thought you meant a web chat. I do need to get out a bit.

For conference calls, would skype be a possibility. I have only used it once, but i have heard it has teleconferencing capabilities (up to 5 users).

Also, a web chat isn't necessarily a bad way to go. or perhaps once in a while. This would allow people who are removed (like me) to participate.

    Rachel et. al.,

If you do any web-based chats or conference calls, I'd love to be a part of it. As a Peninsular, I don't make it out to the city as much as I would like. But I could sure use the support and feedback for my blog, and I'm interested in what everyone else is doing.

If you wanted to handle out of area folk- you can try a system like gotomeeting.com. I am not aware of any free conferencing systems except for Skype (for five or less).

I do a lot of teleconferencing and training. Unfortunately it has been my experience that everyone should either be offline or online, as offline users tend to dominate the topics and online users miss important information that is relayed face to face.

So I think what I'm hearing is that there is need/interest in both ideas: an online chat group AND a live social meeting. I think what I'll do is look into setting up an event sometime in February and see how it goes. I will also start investigating some way to host a chat group (this may be a potential thing we can do through Biznik 2.0, if memory serves).

I keep wanting to go to your blog class so I'd definitely be interested in a group chat. At the moment, my blog is mostly me thinking out loud and is related to my business in the sense that a lot of what I'm thinking about is yoga-related! But it would be interesting to see what other folks are doing and how they're making the connection with their work.

So I got off my duff and put an event in the calendar. I hope to see you interested locals there: http://biznik.com/events.html?id=252. I would love to see you all there.

For those of you too far to drive in, I am still pondering options for an online chat group somewhere. Any suggestions for how to do that are welcome.

Will this support group include things like what to even talk about? My business is pretty simple, and I don't tend to have much interaction with clients after our initial meet and greet. As a pet sitter, I'm dumbfounded as to what to blog about.

I'm interested in the group regardless!

Yes, this group will definitely talk about what to talk about! That's one of the biggest blogger concerns, in my opinion.

So...I found us a place to have our remote conversations. Check out my small business blogger discussion forum at bizblog.informe.com! Sara, Charles, Mike, and Ed, since you can't make it to the live event, I hope this will help fill the need to connect with other biz bloggers. I would love it if you guys would help me get the conversations started!

This forum is unmoderated, but please keep discussion courteous and not too far off topic.
