Subscribe to Indie Biz Q&A Call me crazy, but.....

....at the very least I hope it's amusing.

Hi,

I'm a Biznik Newbie and have just launched a website featuring a totally new concept:

A Muse Meant 4U - Creative consulting services provided in exchange for a gift at http://www.amusemeant4u.com

I've been experimenting with it in an unofficial capacity for a couple of years, and it's a ton of fun. Of course, now that I've launched the site, and am offering my services in an official capacity, the questions abound:

  • Is the concept easily understood?
  • Is the layout, design and content easy to read and navigate?
  • Would you be likely to utilize her services? If not, why?
  • What could be improved?

What do you think? I am sooooooo curious! In thanks for your feedback, I'm entering everyone who reviews the site at http://www.amusemeant4u.com and replies to my 'A Musing' questions above into a drawing for a free 4 hour Muse session ($500 value).

Fine Print: Reviews must include a minimum of the four requested feedback items listed above, and be submitted by midnight on July 17th, 2008. The winner will be randomly drawn and notified by email on July 18th. Winner will receive a free 4 hour Muse session at a mutually agreed upon location and date. The Muse session must be redeemed within 30 days of receipt, and has no cash value. One entry per person.

Disclaimer: A Muse Meant 4U is a Biznik newbie who may unknowingly make typical newbie mistakes, such as posting to the wrong category or misunderstanding the code of conduct. If so, give her a hard time if you must, but then go check out her site. She's a one woman show with zero staff, zero funding, and four amusing children to provide for. She can use all the help she can get.

Alright, Marlowe. I am game and you want to know why? Because I took a look at the site right after I saw your question - is the concept easily understood? The whole "Creative consulting services provided in exchange for a gift" part is what caused me to cock my head in the first place so I scanned a little further, saw your question and off I went.

Now please allow me to answer your second question first:

Q: Is the layout, design and content easy to read and navigate?

A: Yes and yes. As soon as I saw the black and the artwork and that color, I was in love. (I know you'll go see what I do and that may tell you why it resonated with me.) That artist is phenomenal and the art alone made me want to click on every page to see what was there. I also appreciate your not making the pages crazy long. So this was an easy one to answer. For me, it's wonderful. I can sit and just look at it and that means the feel of your site matches what you are selling. Congratulations.

Q: Is the concept easily understood?

A: Sorta. I feel like you are covering up the fact that you are simply providing a form of counseling. I am an encourager by nature so I THINK I understand how you would differentiate between counseling and a "musing" people but I think linear people won't get the difference right away. Then again, linear people might not be drawn to this and see the value since you are positioning this as entertainment. "Hmm. Entertainment that costs $125 per hour and I am told I need to do at least 4 hours to reap the benefits, which means she wants me to spend $500 for fun? Hmm." I am confused by your making it seems like entertainment which doesn't mean it won't be valuable but the value of entertainment, in my eyes, is different from the value of counseling. I don't know. It's just my opinion. I do not want you to think I am devaluing your service because I am not.

Q: Would you be likely to utilize her services? If not, why?

A: Right now, no. Strictly because of cost but that simply means - as my business partner and I always say to each other - that I am most likely not your target market. Can't afford it. Straight up. You know, maybe if there were some kind of way to give an example of how the muse operates, it can entice people to sign up. Now here's the part of your site that makes me cringe and not because of you. I cringe when others do it to, like when they send chain letter emails:

Don’t believe it? Don’t do it. Want to draw abundance and prosperity into your life through the simple act of gratitude? Do it! It works. Showing your gratitude to your Muse not only magnifies the very thing you are grateful for (her inspiration), it actually fuels it. In other words, the more give, the more you get.

It's not that I don't believe but I don't want to be led to feel like I won't be prosperous because I am not giving the Muse a gift. It's emotional blackmail.

I know, I know Marlowe. This is NOT what you are doing. It's not what you mean. I swear I understand that. :-) I'm just giving you the feeling I get from it.

    Q: What could be improved?

A: Hmm. It looks good. I do feel like you are saying it's one thing when in fact it's something else but it is what it is and improvement here may be merely a call for more clarity. It costs what it costs. You have testimonials which is great. But hey! I wonder. Can your past clients say briefly how they were stuck and how you got them unstuck or rather, what changed after meeting with The Muse? It might help.

OK. Since you only just now posted this, I know others will clamor to see what you are about since your post was as enticing as your site is. I can't wait to see what others say.

Good luck! (Except I don't believe in luck. Hmm again. OK. Blessings on your adventure!)

Thank you so much Monica! You rock! I agree on all points. The disclaimer that my services are "for entertainment purposes" is out. Even though the process of being Mused is thoroughly entertaining and inspiring, it is better to focus on the fact that it is highly effective. I have clients who have profited tremendously from their Muse sessions, and I should make that more apparent on my site.

This leads me to one of your other brilliant comments about giving the reader examples of the process and previous client's experiences. I'm on it!

And yes, I see what you mean about unwittingly giving the impression of "emotional blackmail". That is the LAST thing I want my readers to feel. My intent was actually the opposite. The whole idea of tapping in to The Power of Gratitude is so empowering and effective that I'm horrified I could manage to present it otherwise! Thank you so much for pointing that out. I will definitely rewrite that section.

Thank you again for your very insightful and thorough feedback, Monica. Your kind diplomacy and genuine support of my efforts is such a gift!

Joy and Abundance to You and Yours!

    Marlowe
