Subscribe to Indie Biz Q&A Going out on a Limb - Recycling

I'm a big believer in the 3 R's and look for ways to be 'green'.

The rare time, I do send personal mail between friends, we re-use envelopes (the ones that come from credit card invitations, donation requests, etc.).

I would like to re-use these in my business with a big green sticker saying that "I recycle" or something to that effect.

I know that image is important in business, so I'm reluctant to do this, despite my wish to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Is it worth the risk?

Love to hear your ideas on this.

Marianna, I think you should definitely take the risk. Your customers will know where your values lie and you will actually start attracting more customers that agree with your values.

Remember people don't care until you show them how much you care. I'm getting read to host an eco-friendly event with Kirk Spencer, Toyota Fleet Manager and we hope to attract people like you.

By the way; if you can check out Jeff Wenker's profile. He has a great service called "Earth Class Mail". They actually have your mail sent to them; they scan the mail and send it to you via email and then you mark whether you want to the original mail shredded or recycled.

    Cheers!

    Helen

Thanks for your input, Helen. I'll be curious to hear how your eco-friendly event goes.

I just heard that there are 10 R's (at least in sustainable tourism). When I find out what they are I'll let you know.

I wouldn't do it unless you know how your customer will receive that kind of statement. Image is important in business and you can recycle those things without putting your business name on them. Art T.

What you CAN do Marianna, is purchase envelopes that are made from 100% post consumer recycled content.

Check out both: http://www.sustainablegroup.net and http://www.greenoffice.com

Both have high recycled content products - one is local to Seattle - the other is somewhere else.

You can still make those stickers - on recycled paper even - and they can promote the product and concept of recycling without affecting the super image of your biz!

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me. This is an area of expertise for me!

    Blessings, Amy

Interested in those 10 R's too. Nothing shows up on google.

There are actually 4 commonly spoken of R's: Reduce Reuse Recycle Repurpose

All of these concepts are incorporated in my services for interiors.

My company - www.primesourcedistributors.com offers many eco-friendly promotional products to market your company. Take a look at my profile or visit our website for more info - I also just posted an article on using "green" promotional products.

Thank you all for your input.

Amy, in my mind, reuse is like repurpose...but, I guess if it helps people to remember....

    By the way, thanks for doing the Google search - that was on my list of things to do. :}

I think showing that you are going green is an excellent way to appeal to people's values, which is definitely something to consider doing if those values are part of what your business is focused on promoting.

This forum is unmoderated, but please keep discussion courteous and not too far off topic.
