Subscribe to Indie Biz Q&A How do you stay motivated? I feel like I suck at it...

I have a job where if I want to get paid, I need to do things like go find clients and partners. In my job as a mortgage consultant, I have a quota I need to meet each month- I hate pressure like that and it would be the only thing I would change, if I could change something about my job. I love working with multiple clients and am addicted to that feeling of success. However, with all the market changes, my job just got a lot harder and to compensate, I have to WORK harder. So I sat down today and said I was going to send emails to real estate agents who were working with America Home Mortgage, which just tanked. Instead, I read a 450 page book about a teenage wizard (not Harry Potter) in 5 hours. So my brain is working, just not on the right things- it is like I am creating distractions. When it comes to my company, Newlywed University, where there are no quotes- I still feel unmotivated. I really want to succeed with both but sometimes I think there is too much to do so I just don't do anything. Then I feel guilty and sad and get in a slump and then it all starts over again. Has anyone been through this or have any suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks for this thread - it's a couragous thing to speak the truth.

I, too, work with real estate agents in my staging business.

Although I still send out big mailings from time to time, what works for me is actually developing relationships one on one. Some of my best income comes from agents who know and trust me.

And the truth is, if people trust you and feel like they know the real you, they're a lot more likely to refer you business and buy from you.

Can you mix in some quality time with people in the industry that you really like?

well, here's a question: is it really such a bad thing that you took a bit of time out for you to read Harry Potter? Maybe part of your "slump" is coming from the fact that, in the gearing up to work harder, you're not taking time out to recharge and reconnect with yourself, and now your brain is forcing you to shut down and just be alone for a while. It happens to all of us sometimes.

My suggestion is to a) go easy on yourself for needing a bit of time to yourself right now, and don't judge the breaks; b) take some time to figure out specific, manageable goals, and then put together an action plan for reaching them, and c) remind yourself daily that YOU CAN DO THIS.

    Best of luck!

Hehe... I have trouble staying motivated but I'm allowed to! Right now my business is a hobby/part-time thing but I hope to make it my only job.

The only advice that I have is [last resort]... If you can't motivate yourself and everything fails... find a job which will force you to stay on task and work... you know... not be your boss. =P

[No thats not what I did!]

    Good luck!
