Subscribe to Indie Biz Q&A New laptop HP, Dell, Gateway or IBM

I'm looking to purchase a new laptop before the end of the year. I need it for business with the ability to go on the road, make and store docs., send and receive images. I'm looking for opinions. What do you like out their? The four listed above are my basic choices but if you know of something that you think is better let me know. If you sell loptops let me know I might just buy one from you. Art T.

I own a Dell XPS M1710 and love it! [Only some troubles due to Vista being new...]

I have had a good experience with Dell and recommend Dell.

If you choose Dell or IBM... I can help you with a discount [Employees of the company I work for receive a corporate discount. I can give you the code].

Let me know and good luck!

I've had the best luck with IBM, but I'm not so keen on the idea of buying from Lenovo. In Lieu of IBM, Toshibas are great.

As far as Windows 'puters, I've owned both a Sony and a Dell laptop and both stayed with me until the death. That Dell was as tough as nails...and even survived tumbling down a flight of stairs in a very flimsy bag. Of course it was a heavy beast. I think it weighed nine pounds. hehe.

9 pounds that doesn't sound very portable. Thanks evreyone; I've been using an HP and its been good for a while but it has so many little quirks now. Any other feedback out there. Art T.

Dell's support is called selective support. While it is good, it is only good on selective things. Anything else and they blame the part manufacturer or software developer but don't offer solutions.

Gateway is dead. They are going in the hole and rumors of buyout by Acer are strong. So I would hold off on anything Gateway until the rumor mill stops grinding.

If you like paying for the name, like Nike or Fitch then buy an IBM. They use the same parts as everyone else but charge double because it has the three letters on it.

I have never had a problem with HP. I have had Compaqs (which are a lot better than they were 6-8 years ago), and Pavillions which I really like.

But then it all comes down to features, needs and style. Regardless of the model you buy, go out and get a version of XP pro before January 1 when people have to stop selling it and replace Vista on the laptop.

PC Magazine's annual survey of laptops showed the best three were Apple, Fujitsu, and Lenovo (IBM) in that order. The metrics were reliability, tech support, repairs, percent needing repair, and likelihood of recommending.

Toshiba is worth consideration, but only the Tecra and Portege line, skip the Satellites.

I disagree with Scott's IBM brand/pricing opinion, since they were bought by Lenovo a couple years ago I think there is no longer a premium for their systems.

Apple laptops are always worth considering because they're the only machines that can both be a Mac and a PC.

HP in case you're wondering is below average for tech support and repairs.

XP's was granted a "stay of execution" and MS will offer it until midyear 2008. I'd pick XP over Vista.

(Gratuitous plug - I sell the Macs and Lenovos)
