Subscribe to Indie Biz Q&A Opinion please,on web & email address

My official business name is Change of Heart Stress Solutions. I chose to shorten my web & email address to www.changeofheart.ca & changeofheart@shaw.ca so that people didn't have to do so much typing.

I wonder if that was an unwise decision as "Change of Heart" doesn't reflect what I do. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Personally I prefer the name @ the business website[ Bob@business.net ] or if the name is too big you can go with info @ the business website [info@business.com].

    This is just my preferrence...

Don't forget you can always forward one [or many] of your email addresses to the email address that you mainly use.

    Mariana,

    It's a good question.

For search engine purposes, it's important to have relevant keywords in the URL and title of each page. "Stress solutions" is a vast area, so I would suggest narrowing your focus to a specific audience with a specific subset of stress issues. (I'd recommend this even if you were not building an online biz. The more specific your niche, the easier you will be to find.)

I see on your site that you offer services for adults and children. Pick one. Narrow it even further (e.g., children --> grade-school children) Then develop pages that speak to stress solutions for children with one topic per page. Put the topic in the page title and the page URL.

For example, your home page could be changeofheart.ca with a title of "Stress solutions for young children"

Then you might have 6-12 articles on stress and young children, with page URLs like changeofheart.ca/reducing_mealtime_stress_for_grade-schoolers.html changeofheart.ca/what_to_say_when_your_child_throws_a_tantrum.html changeofheart.ca/how_color_affects_stress_levels_in_kids.html

Those are goofy titles, but may serve to demonstrate the principal.

I agree with Andrey that it is more professional (and better branding) to use your domain name in your email address and have all biz emails forwarded to your ISP, if that's your preferred way of getting email.

As to the primary URL, there are several ways to go. My www.mollygordon.com site gets heaps of traffic, but then it's been up for more than 10 years and I have lots of articles out on the web that link back to it. www.authenticpromotion.com does pretty well, too. My corporate site, www.shaboominc.com is the newest, least focused, and least trafficked. I'm due for an overhaul of my web strategy, too!

Mariana, definitely agree with the two above...

I like your domain name, and if at all possible, would suggest you purchase anything you can practically associate with your business name... meaning, buy all domains that you can: changeofheart.net, .com, .org, etc.

I will reiterate that it looks much more professional when you have an email address that is associated with your business domain name.

Thank you for your input and suggestions, Andrey, Molly and Erin. Things I hadn't considered when I started.

Today, I rec'd. an item in the mail that was addressed to "Change of Heart" omitting the "Stress Solutions". I guess that's my answer - I need to make it clear that I provide stress solutions and that it is part of my business name.

I'm actually considering changing my business name. I love the Change of Heart part, but, as I now see, it doesn't tell what I do if I only use it. On the other hand, Change of Heart Stress Solutions is a mouth full and a lot to type.

So, back to the drawing board.

    Amazon doesn't say "books."

I don't think your biz name needs to say "stress solutions. I do think you need a tagline that combines your audience, their problem, and you solution.

Oooo, good example, Molly, thanks. Now, for the "Amazonian" type of recognition.

My registered business name is Change of Heart Stress Solutions, with the tag line being "for a better life". I am also re-tooling my tag line.

Consistency is key in any branding. What people read into a brand is all the years of promotion and advertising that has been carefully crafted to make that happen. Amazon, Nike, Apple have poured millions into who they are, small businesses don't have that luxury. Stick with your name and ensure that everything you do around your business builds on it.

Interestingly, the .com version of your name is taken by Warner Bros and the .org is a flash animated radio/internet ministry site!

Your tagline should not defend your name, but support your offering. Your name does not have to describe who you are or what you do, as long as it is memorable. It's all about targetted marketing and making sure the people who need and will buy your services understand it is there for them.
