When I sold Infiniti automobiles ('93 I think), direct mail to the right neighborhoods was the most effective way to bring in buying customers. Seems like personal connections are more relevant in order to create the right referrals and buzz in general that you're looking for. How many artists do you know who are doing what you want to be doing with your business?
