Thanks Suzanne for pointing out my link wasn't working. Here's the clicky version:
Seeking galleries/ coffee shops to show art
Hey there, anyone have a favorite place to see art ala coffeehouse, hair salon, restaurant? I'm looking for the next place to show - it's been a year. I'm not quite ready to seek a gallery but want to get motivated to step up the pace a little.

Tell me more Adrienne; what makes it a great place to show art? What kinds of art have you seen there? And where is it in town?
thanks!

Oh. Tacoma. Also, Tempest Lounge, which I didn't think of until Adrienne said Tacoma.

Looks cool, thanks Leila. I need to explore more at the south end.

They always have an artist's work featured in the coffee shop. And I know they have artist's receptions sometimes when new work is installed. I would contact them and get the details -- their site is http://www.blackwatertacoma.com/ To directly talk to them about art, the email is theartdepartment@blackwatertacoma.com.
It's a neat place and lots of artsy people hang out there.
When I lived in Seattle I used to go to Firehouse Coffee in Ballard often, and there was always art there. I actually bought a piece there once.
There's also Habitude Salon in Fremont and Ballard, and they exhibit art.
That's all I can think of right now, but if I think of something else, I'll let you know!

Oh, and I forgot to say that Blackwater is downtown Tacoma on Fawcett. The art I have seen there are paintings and photography of all sorts.

Do either of you have a sense of how work is priced in those various venues? Size of work?
-

I would definitely contact the individual venues and ask what is common for them. Mostly I've seen a little posting next to the work with the price, which I'm sure varies depending on the type/size/artist.
A good place to inquire about art questions in this area is to join the Tacoma Art Listserve. I think you just send an email that says "join" to TacomaArt@cityoftacoma.org. You can email questions to others on the server and get great responses.

OK, I needed this info to get fired up. It's been a year since my last show and I need to get focused. Thanks to you both and Ingrid's great suggestions too.

Denise and Michelle at Tempest have shown LARGE pieces, as large or larger than any that I've seen of yours, Hannah. I don't know about prices though.
(I DO know that they make a mean cocktail! And, they are across the street from Johnson's Candy--not Theo Chocolate by any means, but a classic candy shop that goes way back.)

The Stumptown Coffee locations in Portland have monthly shows of artist works. You might check to see if the Seattle shops do the same. Good luck!

In the Snohomish Biz Journal, there is a coffee shop looking for artists. Dont recall where but if you pick up a copy, i bet you can find it!

Check out Local Color in Pike Place Market. It's a very friendly coffee shop/gallery and they rotate new artists every month, with an opening night event every first Saturday. Not to mention lots of traffic every day and so good sales potential.
Also if you look at the Artists section of Craigslist there are often calls for artists there.

Twilight are a great bunch of ladies who are all artists themselves and have 2 retail shops; one in the Pike Place Market and one in West Seattle (next to Easy Street Records).
Cheers!

Oh yeah, I've been in Local color - love that place. And I've seen great art there too. Unfortunately I find the Craigslist "Artists" section to be a timesink with a lot of flotsam and jetsam to wade through. Thanks for the suggestions Emma.
As for Hotwire, I've been to the store next to Easy Street Records and really liked their stuff. I will keep them in mind as well, love that 'hood. And I work near Pike Marketplace so I guess it's worth checking out their other location. Thanks Cari!

Hi Hannah,
Contact Michael Mandell at M3 Bodyworks. His massage studio is a good venue for showing art and, if you work together, he helps get you promoted for the West Seattle Art Walk. I'll refer him to you. :-)

I don't really know where to take your art in Seattle, but I want to take a minute to say what beautiful pieces you have. Circle of Roots is especially striking.
There's a hair salon here in Portland that may be interested. http://theparlourstjohns.com
Best of luck!

Thankyou David - actshullie, I'm heading down next weekend so maybe I'll check it out the salon while I'm there.
The Circle of Roots is really womb-like isn't it? Of course it's also kind of looking up at the sky, church-like....or maybe it's about how the womb IS the place of worship.....no, no, I think it's about roots and the importance of being grounded.....
This forum is unmoderated, but please keep discussion courteous and not too far off topic.
