Subscribe to Indie Biz Q&A Slideshow with audio: What program to use to make one?

I need to make a short educational program showing people how to set up User Profiles on a pc and use the Accessibility Wizard to set them up for physically handicapped clients.

What is the best way to go about this? This is for a non-profit and so free software is best! We do not have video capability.

We want to show screen shots like: Go to control panel, open User Accounts, set up a new profile, name it LOW VISION. Then log out of the administrator profile and open the LOW VISION profile . . . and then we will walk them through how to set up that profile for users with low vision.

Are you using a Windows computer to make it? If you have Windows Vista, it comes with two tools that will help you with this. One is called the "snipping tool" and can be found by clicking on your start button then typing in snipping tool in the search bar. This is easy to use and lets you save screenshots as JPG files.

You can then create your slideshow using Windows Movie Maker. You'll have to find a way to record audio separately with microphone. You find free audio recording and editing software here: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Alternatively, you can download for free this screencasting software which lets you record exactly what you are doing on your screen to create a screencast video. http://www.screentoaster.com/ You'll need a way to record audio to go with it as well.

Thank you Kimberly. We are still on XP but the screentoaster looks possible.

Wow - I had no idea about the snipping tool! Thanks, Kimberly, for bringing that to everyone's attention. It's great to learn about nifty time-saving features!

To your question, Viv, I've also wondered about PowerPoint as a tool for something like you're creating. I notice you can add audio narration to a presentation; I don't know about how flexible or intuitive the process is, or if it truly fits what you're describing. Screentoaster looks great... going to check it out myself. Thanks for posting the question!
