Subscribe to Indie Biz Q&A What is a Biznik...from a tagline perspective?

Is it...

a) Radical self promotion b) An urban tribe c) A business networking group that doesn't suck d) A supportive business network that encourages creativity, radical thinking, and community.

Some of you might be saying all of these things, but when you try to be everything to everybody, you end up nothing to anybody.

As a trademark attorney with a routinely vested interest in the marketing/branding efforts of small businesses, one of the principles that I operate by is "tell people what you do". Especially if your name is "suggestive", as Biznik is ... which is preferable for a trademark (http://veritrademark.com/article_fivetrademarkcategories.html) , any supporting marketing should be "descriptive", so people know immediately what they are getting into when Biznik hits their radar screen.

So what is Biznik? In my opinion, Biznik is a networking group that seeks to build community amongst independent businesses run by progressive people.

Even though we aren't corporate, and we aren't stodgy, and most of us don't like George Bush, let's leave that implicit, and let's leave room for an open interpretation of "progressive". So I say ditch the "urban tribe" and other pithy sayings and cliches...

Since Biznik is also in it's infancy and struggling with identity, I would love other peoples' ideas on how to improve upon my conception of Biznik.

Ideas?

At first taste, "Radical Self Promotion" was too hard-around-the-edges for my sensibilities, but that aversion lasted just a nano-second, and the phrase settled in perfectly.

I'm abhor anything that approaches a Starving Artist paradigm; it's all an anchor and a cage.

So, Self Promotion, celebrated--well, it's about ph*ckin time. Radically--keepin' it out of the ruts of mediocrity and falseness.

True Bizniks embody certain qualities and the qualties of our interactions convey a lot about what Biznik is and seeks. So, the hard-around-the-edges element of "Radical Self Promotion" fades away.

Danny - you joined before I did so who am I to recommend better ways for you to improve on your conception of Biznik, but I do have a couple thoughts. First, I agree that it is what you say it is and I like how you got there. Also, I like your main message of telling people what you do - and I should probably do it better myself.

Rather than characterize Biznik as "struggling with identity" I would say that it is fundamentally organic in it's expression. Now let's see if I can make that make sense. I want to use the term "systems approach" but there might be some academically correct connotation that I'm not aware of. My use of the term comes from Permaculture and things like The Natural Step. It recognizes natural systems as collections of elements that perform various functions; the more functions an element can perform (services provided or products produced which are used by other elements of the system) the more complex, but also stable, the system.

Anyway, that might all be old hat to you, but I see Biznik as functioning this way, intentionally or not. And when I say organic I mean it in the sense that we are all elements of the Biznik "system" and in the sense that it is both creative and adaptive.

There's nothing worse than long rambling posts so I will leave it at that.
