    Hey Linda,

    Welcome aboard!

Someone asked this question a few weeks ago. I'm not sure if my answer was globally accepted, but I said that you are an indie biz owner if it affects your income when you take time off.

I took two weeks off at Christmas and it affected my short-term income, and also made me very busy for the next two months -- so I guess I fit my own definition.

I'd say indie is Independant, in that you work for yourself, run your own business, are chief decision maker, and get to enjoy the challenges and opportunity that entreprenuership brings .... though I don't think all bizniks are all entreprenuers .... many are.

Thank you Paul & Debbie. Sounds like "indie" is short for "independent". Both of your explanations make sense to me.

I'd go with "independent." And welcome!

I took it to refer to Independent Contractor, another term for solopreneur, or sole proprietor.

Dan and I chose to use the word "indie business" as a shortened version of the term "independent business" that has some sass.

Think of what "indie films" (like the Indie Film Channel) are to Hollywood films, and what "indie rock" is to the stuff you get out of the mainstream music industry, and that's what Biznik's community is to the mainstream business networking groups.

Words like: authenticity, innovation and camaraderie; along with concepts like: in Biznik you'll find...
: people who's business is an extension of their personal expression, and
: people who are so proud of their independent status, they wear it proudly on their sleeve.

    Welcome to Biznik!

    Thanks Lara ~

I appreciate your deeper explanation ..... gives much more meaning to the word.

Thanks for creating Biznik - I look forward to participating more.

Linda, thank you for the inquiry about the term "indie biz owner". I too was a little curious about the exact meaning and definition (s) of the term. I am new to Biznik also, glad to see it defined and to know that I fit somewhere in the mix of classifications.

    Well informed is well armed!

i take term "indie" to mean those who are attracted to making their own path and having many options in life and biz. basically, it we're the folks who take the red pill, much as Neo did in "The Matrix."

This forum is unmoderated, but please keep discussion courteous and not too far off topic.
