Subscribe to Indie Biz Q&A Where Are the Women Bloggers?

I posted an article in my blog asking for women bloggers to, um, well...unite! :) I latched onto the idea when I realized there are minimal places online for women bloggers to congregate and network. Here's the link to the article as it ran on TrulyTwistedMarketing.com. If you don't want to click over, I posted the article below without links. Love to know what other biznik members think about the idea.

Ok. Where are they?

This blog is owned and operated by a woman – yes, that would be me. I know there are tons of other blogs by women but where are they?

The reason I’m asking this question is simply that I was thinking the other day about women and that we, as a group, don't really have a place online or enough places online that are just for us.

Okay, guys, no eyeball rolling please.

And to take it one step further, I don't really see women-owned blogs at the top of the heap. My line of thinking…which (I have to warn you) tends to run rampant once I latch on to an idea…really got started by doing a Google search on women bloggers.

Go ahead. Try it.

#1 womenbloggers - web ring (directory) but still a great place to get a link from and good information.

#2 blogher - cool conferences, good information

While the blogs I found were interesting and offered up valuable information. They still didn’t quite answer my questions. I wanted to know who those other women were and what they were blogging about - work, family, kids, parents, hobbies? Are they on Technorati, Squidoo, or using social networking in any way? Women tend to be relational by nature. They talk and share -a lot. So, why am I not hearing those voices? Is it because I’m not listening? Is ANYONE really listening?

I think it’s time to turn up the volume.

I saw an article last week posted in the Reuters Second Life bureau where one of the top Technorati bloggers, Arianna Huffington was interviewed on her new book. There were two things that struck me:

First, she a grown-up, successful businesswoman, author, radio personality and she has an avatar in Second Life (Arianna Hera). Don’t know about you, but for some reason, I just hadn’t thought about the two going together but it makes sense when you realize she has a grasp of technology and definitely knows how to use it.

Second, she’s not afraid to be bold, put herself out there and create controversy - thus her new book on being fearless.

Interesting.

So, here’s my challenge. If you are a woman and you are a blogger – leave me a comment or send me an email about your blog, about you. You can be brief and add your links. I’ll post the responses (links and all) and let’s see what kind of conversations we can get started.

Here’s an example format to follow:

Your Biggest Challenge in Blogging (feel free to dish!):

Women of the blogosphere….UNITE!
(um, just couldn’t resist that one)

I've been blogging for a year now? and in fact, got my gig as a design columnist because of my biz blog. Laura saw my biz blog and asked me if I wanted to come on board at the Examiner :)

My blog is on my website at EcoKind Design.

I write about sustainable interior styling, including resources and tips for, as well as include a wealth of links to sustainable lifestyle resources.

My biggest challenge? Making sure I keep up with my writing for both my blog and my column, as well as do everything else I need to do for my biz. I'm certainly not at loss for content. I have a file full of saved topics to write about!

I have been blogging for five months now and sometimes it can be a lonely pursuit.

Just announcing that Bob and I are hosting a "Get Your Blog On" event, Wednesday, June 18 at 4pm in Renton. If we get a good enough response, we'll be doing this monthly. It's a chance to share tips and challenges and even explore possibilities for promoting each other's blogs. All you bloggers out there who could use a support group, please consider joining us.

I am the only lawyer blogger in my home county which isn't hard to do and one of the only lawyer bloggers in Eastern Washington, which is also not hard to do. I have no clue as to how many women lawyers blog in Washington State-how does one find this out? I had never even thought of myself as a "woman blogger." Your post has started me to thinking and I've decided to start two additional blogs.

    Hi Sonya,

Nohea Lookbook is the name of my design blog, which I started a year ago. I write on my design blog anytime something inspires me or when I am working through a creative endeavor. Topics can include signage as art, photography that caught my eye, an interior space that is evoking an emotion, or simply my journey as a designer.

Design blogging plays an integral part in keeping me fresh as a graphic designer. Most importantly, my blog gives me a live venue to archive imagery, flesh out ideas, and connect with other creatives.

    Best, Calie

Hi Sonya _ i'm a blogger too but I've never had a problem finding other women bloggers. In fact a few have found me and I've expanded my network that way. I too belong to BlogHer but I'll go take a look at your blog post and see what folk are doing in response. It's great to be connected but honestly, the amount of connections I have to keep up with is getting insane so I don't really go looking for more, you know?

I blog, too (and am obviously a woman). I'd like to get connected with BlogHer eventually.

A few of my friends who blog personally rather than professionally have connected with a lot of other female bloggers.

Maybe women tend to blog on a more personal note (particularly about relationships)?

By and large, though, the vast majority of industry & business blogs on the internet are still tech-focused, and that industry is still mostly male. After that, they're news & media focused, and I haven't done the research but I assume that it's an even split between males and females.

I hadn't considered blogging until a few months ago and someone suggested I take my love for educating others about my profession and put it in a blog. I thought okay, what the heck.

Wow! What a journey and it has only been a month. I currently blog once a week. My blog is a professional massage blog. It takes a lot of energy and is a good stretch for me to put myself out there in a written way. I have never thought of myself as a writer and yet here I am.

I don't know if I need support from other women bloggers. It would be nice to find a place for newbie bloggers to express their challenges and fears.

I have been fortunate that the Biznik community has been so supportive of my fledging blogging experience. Thanks everyone!! My Massage Blog

Hi Sonya, I find this question interesting because most of the bloggers I know, myself included, are women. It never occured to me we'd have a gender separate place to meet. Interesting idea.

My blog, by the way, is at http://www.marketing-junkie.com and features practical marketing tips, ideas and ruminations for small business owners.

Please do post info if you set something up.

    Warmest, Stacy
