Subscribe to About Biznik Bug fixes

So, dB joins Biznik today, and instantly finds three bugs. How embarrassing. I've fixed them, and also a fourth, an encoding problem that was causing quotation marks and apostrophes to show up as boxes when M$ Word text was pasted into Biz Talk.

Thanks dB. BTW, I hear the McDonald's in New York are fabulous...

Another bug: The meta-description box under "Edit my profile" doesn't allow any text entry, at least in Firefox 1.5.

Is it simply not allowing you to enter anything into the field? What platform are you on (mac or pc)? I tried it on FireFox 1.5 for Mac and it worked ok for me...

Can't even get a cursor into the field. I'm on WinXP. IE6 works fine.

Crap. Does this mean I'm going to have to finally break down and buy a PC (just for testing purposes)? No. It doesn't. My Intel MacBook just arrived today. It's still in the box (think I'm going to blog the magic of opening it). Now ... how to boot it into Windows for testing... anyone know of a tutorial yet?

That is going to be an expensive dinner for you, Dan. With a 450$ ticket to New York to eat at a McDonalds! :)

I got another bug report that the text inputs weren't working at all on FireFox, so I turned off the gee-wiz editing features for anyone using FireFox. If anyone's having problems with updating their profiles, please let me know.

I am using Mozilla on a PC, and haven't had text input problems. My profile stats are all wrong, but I suspect that is a backend not a browser thang.

Can you explain how your profile stats are wrong?

Uh, well we know the thing about me not being at Chris' Elevator Speech gig, but biznik thought I was. Then there's the matter of (at least) four of the folks that I've invited to become Members, have, yet my stats show one. I made one referral and received one testimonial, which I think somehow became a referral in my stats (and the weirdest thing is that now I cannot find any of the email about that, even though I had to approve it or some such). :-?

I think I can explain all of this... the fact that you're included in Chris's class is my human error (which I've now corrected). Re: the people you've invited to become members, the only way that they get automatically credited to your stats is if they follow the link in the email when they join. Otherwise we have to do it manually, and we don't have any mechanism in place for that. Re: referrals, the person you referred has not accepted that referral, or else it would be visible (I checked in the db, and it's listed as not accepted). There is no testimonial under your ID number in the database, so not sure about that one - are you sure you received a referral? Not saying there isn't a bug, but I want to be sure before I tear things apart too much...

    Dan,

You could give Q ( http://www.kberg.ch/q/ ) a shot. It's a nice OS X GUI for a nifty program called Qemu. There aren't many reports of success at virtualizing Windows XP on the Intel Macs, though.

Alternatively, I'm willing to wager Microsoft updates Virtual PC to run natively on Apple's Intel boxes and that VMware will finally bring their software to OS X.

A last note: You can't, as far as I understand, boot Windows XP natively on the Intel Macs. Apple is using something called EFI, an Intel-created replacement to the previous standard: BIOS. Windows XP 32-bit Edition doesn't support EFI, but Vista is apparently going to ship with support for it. And some people claim XP 64-bit Edition supports EFI.

I'll let you mull all of that over and arrive at your own conclusions. ;) Suffice it to say, it shouldn't be very long before what you'd like to do is possible.

Thanks Michael, I'll check Q out. I've been really disappointed at the performance of the last two versions of Virtual PC - I mean, to call it "underwhelming" would be like calling your home state's winter temperatures "brisk." But let's hope you're right and it finally is a functional product in the next version.

And hey, welcome to Biznik. You're our first MN member.

Thanks for the welcome! I envy those of you on the coasts... something tells me it'll be a while before any events start cropping up in the upper midwest.

arGH. I never got back to chat with you on this.

The missing testimonial--turns out that was someone mis-understanding what a referral is--human glitch.

About inviting new members. If those metrics matter to you, then something in the system needs tweaking so more accurate stats emerge. I'm not whining, just that I know 4 of my invited peeps became members and your stats show only 1. I'd guess that you do have some interest (if not now, at some point) in tracking the source of new members. Maybe you've got something up your sleeve to help members keep track of invitations? I've lost track of who else I have invited; I don't want to pummel folks with invitations, but I can't remember now if certain folks just haven't stepped up and joined, or if I have neglected to alert them to this swell Biznik society.

Yeah that would be cool to have a tool like referrals that shows who you've invited, hey? I'm going to have to wait on that one, though, because I've got my plate so full right now building other mission critical stuff. But keep the ideas coming, please. They'll get built sooner or later.

How do we get rid of the code showing up in my links-they were fine and then a few days ago code started to flash in after the page view and now the code seems permanent. Did I do this inadvertantly without realizing it or is this a bug?

The option for sending a message to all the people who've RSVP'd to an event is absent from the options list on my event page. Instead, I see the option to send a message to the host, which is me. As much as I like me, I don't really need to send myself a message. Is this a known issue?

Why isn't my event showing up in the list of Seattle events?
