Subscribe to Biznik community-builders forum Anyone interested in a book club event?

I'd like to gauge interest for a book club on "Attracting Perfect Customers: The Power of Strategic Synchronicity" by Stacey Hall & Jan Brogniez. It's got some real gems in it that I'm thinking of pulling out for a weekly group that would run for four weeks. I've used the exercises in the book with client groups and found that the material generates great discussions. Any interest out there in such a book club?

I could host it on the Eastside or in Seattle, so if you're interested, please put a vote in for location as well.

p.s. The book is available on Amazon for about $10 (used).

    Hi Debbie -

I just want to second this idea, though I won't be joining the group.

This book is a great resource I know for creating a focused plan to attract customers that fit just-right. I've used it with clients and teleclasses many times, and it always produces good results for those who actually implement it.

So have fun. And if anybody out there is in doubt about whether this is more woo-woo than substance, don't worry. It's solid.

I might be interested if it's in Belltown, QA or downtown. I think 4 weeks is a lot for a commitment...I could see a Saturday brunch discussion or else an evening at a bar or coffee house.

4 weeks does seem like a commitment, and the process in the book works best when you do it over a period of days or weeks. It's really worth it.

Thanks Molly and Cathy for your input. I think a one-time discussion wouldn't be enough if people are interested in going through a couple of exercises and interacting around those. Maybe a 2nd and 4th evening for a couple of months... I'll keep thinking on it and welcome more comments from anyone else who's interested.

I'd love to see more book club events on Biznik, so I think this is a great idea.

I was thinking about doing a book club in the Mill Creek area myself. I think this is a wondeful idea. You could have different topics for books each month etc.....I would love to hear more about your ideas.

Some current titles that I plan to read that I think would make excellent reads for this:

Death to All Sacred Cows: How Successful Business People Put the Old Rules Out to Pasture

Small Is the New Big: and 183 Other Riffs, Rants, and Remarkable Business Ideas

Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die

After wondering if this would "fly" or not, I'm getting re-inspired thanks to your comments. I hadn't heard of Death to All Sacred Cows, but just looked it up. I think it would make a great first book to launch this book club idea. Thanks, Dan! A different book each month will probably work best so people can join whenever, with the books they're most interested in. I'll commit to hosting/facilitating for 3 months and then see how it's going. Stay tuned for the first posting... and thanks again to all for your supportive input!

A year or more, it was common to see at least one "book club"-type event in the calendar at a time. I think if you put one in there, Debbie - it will be well received.

If you'd like some tips on places around town where you can comfortably host an event like this, let me know.

Debbie, A lot depends on where it's hosted. and when Uptown Espresso in Belltown has a room that can be reserved for no charge. I only attend events downtown or Queen Anne (with occasional forays to Capitol Hill).

I was thinking of Mosaic Coffee House because I've heard it's quieter than some other coffee places. That's in Wallingford and may be a more convenient location overall, especially if some are coming from the Eastside (like me). But, if Lara or others know of a convenient, relatively quiet spot downtown, I'd be open to that. I don't mind the distance so much, but I'm a sissy when it comes to parking hassles.

Mosaic is nice...and will probably be nice and cool in the summer. It got a little too chilly for me in the winter time.

Dan, I LOVED Made to Stick! I would read it again if there were a book club discussion on it.

    I WISH I could join!

What a great idea, Debbie. I'll be reading some of the same books, but the travel to Seattle just won't work for me.

I'm sure those discussions will get very interesting.

    Debbie,

Love the idea and the book sounds great. I would definately attend and would like to put in a plug for a Saturday or Sunday event, as I work most night. Mosaic has a meeting room you can reserve, Debbie, and it's a great location for something like this. I think they are closed on Sundays, though, and may have limited hours on Saturdays, so there goes my plug for a weekend event.

Rachel and Dan, yes Made to Stick is a great book. I hosted a Biznik book club event based on that book last fall. Sadly not many attended. :(

Speakimg of great books, I love A Whole New Mind by Dan Pink and see that fellow Biznik Jack Fecker has an upcoming event (on page two of the events page) based on that book. It was a fun read and I hope to attend Jack's event.

I talked with Dan (McComb) about trying to get Dan Pink to Seattle for a Biznik event. Dan told me to take the bull by the horns, so I emailed his agent and never heard back (bad, bad agent). I dropped it as my plate is too full these days but Dan Pink came to Seattle many yrs ago and did a great event with a small, now-defunct biz networking group when A Whole New Mind was released. He was very funny and informative and I would be thrilled if we could get him to Seattle for a Biznik event. Obviously, someone w/more connections than I have has to take this on.

Thanks for mentioning A Whole New Mind, Nancy. I'll add that to the list once we get up and running. I contacted Mosaic and am waiting to hear available dates from them for early May. They're open until 2 on Saturdays, so I'll see about that.

I'd come! I've had that book on my bedside table for weeks - thanks to you Debbie - and would love to read and discuss it with you and other like minds. Thanks for the great idea and I look forward to the full announcement!

Mosaic is a great place if you can get the room on the left reserved. It has a nice 'feel' and a faux fireplace that warms the room. Their chicken noodle soup is to die for and the parking is free! I think a book discussion group is a terrific idea...now if I can just figure out how to squeeze one more fun thing in my calendar. Oh, who needs sleep?

Thanks to all again for your feedback. The first book group event has now been posted! Here's a link. It will take place May 8th, 7-9pm at the Mosaic Coffee House. Based on your input, I decided to start with Made to Stick. The next two books for June and July are listed in the event details. Hope to see you there!
