This looks like a pretty comprehensive guide. I would underline the potential usefulness of checking out your competitors backlinks (yahoo is the best source of data on this; but there are also some online services and pieces of software available to help with the analysis). It's not always possible to reproduce the backlinks they have - but often it is.
I'm not so sure about wikipedia links though. You mention getting links from the discussion section which aren't nofollow-ed. This is true - but they are almost always to other wikipedia documents. Links in the discussion section to external sites are very likely to be culled quite quickly. I also don't like the idea of using wikipedia for SEO purposes - it suffers too much from spam and low quality entries as it is.
