I am sure I have lots of those personal pets too. I agree that the gems and nuggets are way more helpful then a title reference. Probably because they are attached to a personal experience or story. And we love to compare and feel good about the fact that others have shared a similar experience. Thanks for venting and for sharing your "good stuff" too.
Giving Advice - Pet Peeve
I just realized that I have a pet peeve about comments in the business forums. As any pet peeve it might just be me feeling this way, but since it probably is just me, I of course thought it worth mentioning.
When people ask for advice in their topic it kinda bugs me when well-intentioned individuals respond by giving the title & author of their favorite book on the subject. We've all seen it, I ask about 'X' and someone chimes in with, "Oh, you want to know about 'X,' just read, 'Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About X & Then Some,' by Oliver J Xinstein."
Why does that bug me? Well, if I were the one asking for help and an online forum is the route I chose to get that advice I wouldn't be hoping for an answer that would take me to amazon.com or Barnes & Noble, a search and then 5 to 20 hours of reading (not that I am against reading). I would actually be asking for a little piece of wisdom. Perhaps something I hadn't thought about before or even a new spin on a recycled thought. Yes, I would want simple, quick & easy. Is that lazy or efficient?
Don't get me wrong; some of the best advice is a combination of both. When some person who is well-read and more knowledgeable than I gives me their favorite gem from the book they just read and also gives me the reference in case I want to follow up later to further my understanding of the subject. That is good stuff. A fancy title is one thing but a hook is what gets people to the book.
Thanks for letting me vent, whew.

Thanks for posting this. I really hadn't thought about it, but I think you're on to something. I think that when we post online looking for advice, we're really looking for immediate help, something we can quickly digest and implement, something that has worked for someone else. I don't think that's lazy, I think it's just practical in this crazy busy entrepreneurial life.
This forum is unmoderated, but please keep discussion courteous and not too far off topic.
