Subscribe to Coffee Break "Biguttas"

Don't bother looking this one up in the dictionary. It's a word only known to my immediate family, started 35 yrs. ago when my 4 yr. old sister misheard my Mom say, "Go to bed, you look tired and have biguttas under your eyes." (Big gutters)

Then, there's "gungai" a word that's come to mean "water" in my friend's family.

I'm curious - any words in your "family dictionary" that the general population wouldn't know about? It should be noted that these words are usually started by the very young.

I had a client years ago who went by the name of Footie. She was such a sweet woman and funny, so after our work together I felt comfortable enough to ask her about the origin of her name. "I've been called Footie my whole life" she said."....throughout my childhood, college, my adult life. The name came about b/c my younger sister couldn't pronounce my name and it came out Footie, and that nickname stuck." "Oh, what's your real name?" I asked, expecting Frances or Felicia or something along those line. Her response was something like "Melissa" or "Christine"....nothing remotely close to Footie! What a generous spirit to accept that willingly from her little sister and go by that her whole life.

Many years ago, when I taught Deaf kids, I had a student with a mild hearing loss who used to called me "Choobie". I used to tell her if she was trying for "Chubby" she was pretty close but that's not a nice thing to call your teacher. However, if she was trying for "Nancy", she had much better speech skills than that! ;0)

Hi Nancy: Sorry to take so long to reply. Love these anecdotes...no wonder language is considered a living thing - always evolving!

When I was teaching, I have a few names that the kids derived from my maiden name....let's just say they were inventive! :)
