Subscribe to Coffee Break Book recommendation for someone fighting cancer

My grandma was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and has never learned about the power of positive thinking. She's a bit of a "worst-case scenario" personality to begin with, and now she seems like she's getting depressed. I know that it's important for her to stay positive while she goes through treatment. Does anyone know of a good, but simple, book I could send her that explains the benefits that positive thinking (or something along those lines) can have on her health and healing? Thanks!

GiGi: So very sorry to hear the news of your grandma. I have a good friend that is the founder of Northwest Hope & Healing here in Seattle. It is a tremendous organization that supports women with breast cancer. I will see what books she suggests and pass them along to you.

Bridget, how old is grandma, and would she be open to a book on cognitive therapy? If not for her, you might read this book to gently counsel her.

I recommend Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy by Dr. David Burns. Helped me a lot when I needed it.

I'll probably write an article about it one day; that's how much it meant to me.

    With my prayers, Joe

Thanks Liz and Joe. Grandma's 79 and not sure if she would understand cognitive therapy but I appreciate the recommendation. I'll definitely check it out. Liz, if your friend has any suggestions, that would be great.

I appreciate your help and your kind words.

"The Four Agreements" is the book I would suggest.

It might not obviously lend itself to being called a Positive Thinking book, but it is a simple book to read, and it is powerful.

And best wishes to you, too. My own grandma eventually perished from cancer, and it was hard on the both of us.

Something "light and uplifting" that might be a more fun read for your grandma is "Hope for the Flowers" by Trina Paulus. It is filled with positive thinking and a true underdog story. I've found it to be a great gift for all kinds of low points in friends' lives - break-ups, job loss, illness, moving, etc.
