Subscribe to Coffee Break Skepticism..

Perhaps it's just me, but it feels like Biznik has turned into one big "Me too!" forum for self-help addicts? I've spent an hour thumbing through the new Learn section, and I really have to ask, is anybody getting value out of this? I thought business blogs were bad enough but come on. I'm expecting somebody to start talking about the benefits of energy crystals or running naked in the woods around a fire while crying about inner children.

Hey, don't knock running naked in the woods around inner children crying about fire.

    Wait, what? :)

I'm curious, Michael, about what you don't like that you're seeing in the Learn section. I see a lot of specific business advice (how to start up, developing a biz plan, how to cold-call, etc.)

I don't really associate that kind of info with energy crystal work (and I should know from the new age-y stuff).

What were you hoping to find in the Learn section? If there's something missing, maybe pointing it out will inspire someone to write about it.

Is the running naked in the woods a Biznik event? I don't find it listed.

what Biznik is about depends on the perspective from which you are viewing it from.

at times it can seem really campy around here. i have been very guilty in the past of the "me too" syndrome here in Biztalk.

sometimes it seems like a giant popularity contest. But then one can say that the entire business world is a giant popularity contest. i guess where the rubber meets the road is if as a business owner we are able to convert the popularity to the bottom line.

all in all, i see a lot of potential in "Learn". I know i need all the info i can get an independant business person. Why not get some of it here? I'm already here.

we do have people who can talk about energy crystals too. teehee.

personally, i don't know how i could have been an indie without biznik. i've tried before and didn't do nearly as well. i learn so much here and two of my major clients have been/are biznikers!

i'm even trying to spread the love down in portland. they are a bit slow on the uptake down there but the interest is there for sure so just gotta get the fire burning brighter!

Amy, Having had a business in Portland for almost 20 years I understand the mentality of the business community there. They can be really frustrating at times. Glad to see that someone is doing something there.

    Rachel,

There's certainly some good information in the Learn section, and in Biznik as a whole, don't get me wrong.

Where I'm seeing just plain silliness is on the natural tendency of generating self-help like guidances. There are a good number of blanket statistics given without source citation, and that just makes me sad. On top of that the tendency toward scult worship of celebrity bloggers, self-help snakeoil salesmen, and unsubstantiated claims of Greenness is disconcerting.

I don't have the time and energy to put into a better argument, so instead I'm going to move towards silliness and cynicism to make my point.

Everybody on Biznik should watch "Little Miss Sunshine" and pay special attention to Steve Carrell before writing an Article Ask yourself, "Do I want to be that guy?"

Thanks for the clarification, Michael. If it's fair to extrapolate that you're more interested in tangible results, then I would say I agree with you. Self-knowledge is a wonderful thing...and you can't stay in Plato's cave all day. :D

Well I would have to say that the skeptic in me reads most online help information and often asks the question- "and who are you?"

While some of the learn articles are good, some of the highest rating ones are more along the line of self-righteous, rather than self-help.

I realize that there are flavors of how to get things done, but I'm also reluctant to say some things on the comments simply because I disagree whole-heartedly, and while everyone is open to their own opinion and viewpoint, it is unnerving to witness the crowd find themselves with unsubstantiated information.

Along the line of "and who are you".

Today at Zoka, I was approached by a woman who had eavesdropped on a conversation I was having about business development. It was pretty creppy.

She was babbling on and on about Secrets, Manifestation and Attraction, her rates are $250/hour and she promised me that with "With my help you can grow your business 10-fold this year". I politely took her card which informed me that her occupation is a "Business Success Coach".

Being the skeptic I am, I did some research, and found that she's a teacher of a new pyramid/mlm-scam that involves aliens, millenia-old government cover-ups, and meditation.

    Sigh.
