Subscribe to Community-wide general discussion A vacation break to say "howdy"

I'm currently on my annual two-week vacation to the island of St. Croix. Having the phone lines at the house our for the past week has not necessarily a bad thing. Every two or three days we visit the home of some friends, living on the island with working WiFi, to check emails and touch base with the "real" world.

It's been great recharging the batteries, napping a lot, reading books (I'm on my sixth in the past week) and basking in the art of doing nothing. I've also spent some time beginning to write my latest book - by the pool with a rum drink at hand.

Just popping in to say "howdy!" Hope all is well with all Biznikers.

    Hi Jeff,

St. Croix sounds like the perfect place to be to rest, get refreshed and do nothing... And it's sunny! (We had bit of snow in Seattle again yesterday). What books have you been reading?

My ex- brother-in-law is from St. Croix (Santa Cruz)!

I've noticed that you very strategically plan vacations as a matter of course. Maybe you could do a Biznik event on just that here in Portland!

Thanks for checking in, and Happy Rest and Rejuvenation!

    Ruth -

I'm usually in charge of the "library" whenever we travel with friends. It's usually a combination of food, travel, mystery, popular fiction, biography, business and historical writing. So far this trip I have completed the following books:

A Pig in Provence, by Georgeanne Brennan

A Place of my Own: The Architecture of Daydreams, by Michael Pollard

Venetian Stories, by Jane Turner Rylands

The Whole Truth, by David Baldacci

Death of an Englishman, by Magdalen Nabb (A Marshal Guarnaccia Investigation)

Death of an Dutchman, by Magdalen Nabb (A Marshal Guarnaccia Investigation)

The Customer is Always Wrong: The Retail Chronicles, by Jeff Martin

End Games, by Michael Dibdin (An Aurelio Zen Mystery)

The Tenth Muse: My Life in Food, by Judith Jones

The Immaculate Deception, by Iain Pears (Jonathan Argyll Art History Mystery Series)

In addition, I always have a carry-on bag of the magazines I'm behind in ready. This trip the selection included Oregon Home, Out, Portfolio, Vanity Fair, Entrepreneur, Fortune Small Business, Seattle Business, Fast Company, This Old House, and Garden Design.

Time to get back to the pool...

    Tshombe -

I have done presentation on just that topic in the past. Most recently presenting Creative, battery-recharging, vacations are a necessity - not a luxury at the Creative Freelancer Conference in Chicago last summer. Perhaps I can fit a Biznik event on my schedule this fall. (I try to not do more than three presentations a month and some are already filled)
