I hate commercialization. But if you are a business owner, it can help manage one of the hardest things to do during the holidays: maintain a healthy budget for the entire “big picture”

You have personal items: Christmas gifts, holiday parties, etc and you have your business items: new tools, marketing, and accounting 101. A lot of times these simply do not fit together.

While trying to manage all your budgets, this is a good time to write down a top ten list of your bigger items you will need in the next few months and save a pretty hefty margin.

Sites like TheBlackFriday.com allow you to browse black Friday deals early: and present some of the “online only” deals that you can get while sipping cocoa and wearing fuzzy slippers with your family.

If for some reason you miss getting a deal during Black Friday, sites like FatWallet.com run on-going analysis of deals happening around the country and help you locate the best price on things you may need.

What are your tips and strategies for managing a healthy and happy holiday season while trying to meet all of your "big picture" goals?

Thanks for the great tips Barry.

I personally don't get into the holiday gift giving thing. It's insane. I like getting someone a gift they don't expect at an unexpected time.

I have a few suggestions for people who do exchange gifts and those who have large families:

    1) Write a sincere letter/email to invite everyone into a "Let's not exchange Christmas gifts" pact. This can open up the conversation to decide what to do instead. This dialogue would bring people closer, probably more than receiving a gift that will end up in your garage sale in summer. (This pact could exclude kids. :)

    2) Agreeing to donate money to a local shelter or a charity of your choosing.

    3) Drawing names out of a hat so you only buy for one person and buy them something on their "Top 5 things I definitely need" list.

This forum is unmoderated, but please keep discussion courteous and not too far off topic.
