My Day Office offers something similar to what I think your offering.
Co-working in Seattle: Who's Interested?
Hi everyone -
I'm wondering if there's already a Seattle Biznik Co-Working Community out there somewhere. If so, let me know.
If not, is anyone interested in creating one? Co-working, in case you don't know, is when indies like us get together to create an office-like atmosphere (minus the bosses and intrigue) so we have 1) a place to go to and 2) people to talk to.
I, for one, love everything about working from home...except the actual working from home. Anyone else feel the same? If so, write me a response.
If there's enough interest, maybe we could organize a meeting to discuss some different options.
Thanks,
Norman

Yes My Day Office is just the ticket to get you out of the home office and into a working environment that stimulates as well as allows you to meet people in a great business setting and take a meeting in a professional office setting that help to show you off as a professional.
This has been tried before, but this one really works. You should check it out and take the tour.

Don't also forget Office Nomads!
Both My Day Office and Office Nomads are Biznik members - or rather, the people behind them.
My Day Office- Shauna Office Nomads- Jacob & Susan
My Day Office is in Belltown. Office Nomads is in Cap Hill. Both places have their own unique take on co-working! Both neat spaces.
Yay co working!

I work at Office Nomads (officenomads.com) every single day and absolutely love it. Actually, I'm there right now.
If you're on or near Cap hill, I recommend it. I haven't been to My Day Office, but from what I've heard and what they're website represents it seems a lot stiffer and more corporate.

Norman, haven't you been to My Day Office? We are a professional co-working alternative, where you can meet with clients and hold events. In the office world it is called "Class A Office Space". We also have full administrative support! Drop in and give us a try!

Last april I asked the same question and since then I have been working with Susan Evans to open Office Nomads. We've got a beautiful office on Capitol Hill and things have been going great. We have both traveled around to visit the various coworking places scattered about and I just got back from SxSW where we had a very large attendance of coworking founders from San Francisco to Paris.
If you are looking to open another space I would love to share notes and talk to you about what we needed to do to make it happen.

Hi all -
Thanks for all the great replies. Actually, I'm aware of the great co-working facilities in town - My Day Office and Office Nomads and am not interested in competing with them or opening my own location.
I was more inquiring to find out if an actual community has developed out there. Shauna and Jacob - Are there regular groups of people that show up to your locations every day? That's what I would hope for out of a co-working space: Community. Knowing people and being known. Otherwise, I might as well be going to a coffee shop.
So I look forward to hearing if there is a sense of community at these co-working spaces already. If there isn't, or if there could be room to grow that sense of community, then maybe a Biznik meeting could be organized to try and organize a group who would be interested in being each others' indie office mates at one of these places.
Anyway, I look forward to hearing more on this topic.
Thanks,
Norman

Norman,
The community is our primary focus at Office Nomads. Seattle has enough desks and our business isn't about providing more. We've been very active within Biznik hosting events, meetings, and socials inviting people to be a part of what we are building. There are many ways to go about encouraging community and the best way to get a feel for how we do it is to come in and work here and see if it's right for you. We don't charge for your first visit specifically so you can try us out. A good fit is essential.

Hey there Norman,
Great discussion topic! We've been talking quite a bit about just this at Office Nomads recently. Coworking spaces are designed with what you're talking about in mind - building a community instead of just having another space in which to work. Yes, getting the work done is important, but having the community aspect is key for us. The best way to get a sense of things would be to drop in for a day and check out what is going on. We'd love to have you up at Office Nomads and I'm sure Shauna would be happy to see you at MDO as well. If you want to catch both Jacob and I at Office Nomads stop in on Monday and say hi to us both, and catch up with everyone working in the space during Monday Lunch. :)
Thanks for bringing up the subject- coworking is a really amazing movement forward in creating more useful, interesting and engaging workspaces for independents. I hope you find what you're looking for! And please, if you're interested in reading/learning more about coworking feel free to drop me an e-mail - I'd be happy to point you in the direction of more resources.
Take care, Susan

There's a nice (and growing) community of folks here at Office Nomads. Some of us are here every day, others are in a couple days a week when the "Home office" becomes too oppressive.

Just to jump on the ON community bandwagon a bit, I want to second what Chris said. The community of folks at ON is great and growing. Whenever I get there (not often enough right now) during the week, I find it easier to get my work done because I am out of the house and have the support of a bunch of people around me who are smart, funny and focused. We feed off each other.
You should definitely check it out.

Biznik works at Office Nomads! And I love the community that's forming here. John and I like to stretch out on the couches and work on our laptops, and we can do that at ON. Today, Chris Rugh was working on the couch across from me, and as a result, I might have a new partnership for Biznik that springs from our conversation. Those are the kind of synergies that make not only fun, but profitable. Go Office Nomads.

Norman... I joined My Day Office initially for the access to the great facilities and supporting services that are there.
Since being there, I have formed new relationships with other MDO members, some of which are bizniks also. I enjoy the amenities plus the periodic networking and conversations with other business owners and entrepreneurial types.
So much so that I host a regular Thursday afternoon event open to all bizniks that want to meet at MDO and discuss current business related topics. Join us sometime if you want to get a feel for it. ...Howard

Another (new) option in downtown Seattle - StartPad.org. We have 4 software development startups working out of our First Avenue offices with space for about 10 more folks. We have a mix of private offices and open office space.
You're welcome to come by and check it out.

I read all of this and want to add a thought here. Community is what evolves out of working together in the same locations. Biznik is a community as well. So I suggest you look at everyone and find the one that works for you. I think we all or mostly all enjoy where we do business and in the small business arena, that's a vital element that allows us to share the adventure, the challenge, the growth. Make sense?

What a perfectly wonderful idea!
I happen to love working from home, and since I love Biznik, too, I find it easy to imagine taking advantage of a co-working situation. How very cool.
Hmmm.... maybe I should start one in Suquamish.
This forum is unmoderated, but please keep discussion courteous and not too far off topic.
